Interview with Goran Backman and Fausto Tejeda
Pixomondo VFX Supervisor
question: Within the Pixomondo portfolio, what is your favourite of the most epic battles you have worked on or admired and why?
Goran Backman: Final episode Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 This must have been one of the biggest space battles Pixomondo has ever undertaken. The technical and creative challenges were large and numerous for VFX Supervisor Fausto Tejeda and his team to tackle and direct. The end result was a tightly crafted story with hundreds of spaceships, explosions, and laser mayhem that filled every corner of the screen.
Fausto Tejeda: We have been through many battles over the years, but the one that remains forever etched in my memory is Star Trek: Discovery Season 2“This episode was a true labor of love, brought to life by the dedicated efforts of many talented people. I’m incredibly proud of what we were able to accomplish, both from a creative and technical standpoint. Our efforts have been recognized for the exceptional quality of our work, including an Emmy nomination.
question: Which creature or alien featured in the project captured your imagination the most, and why?
Goran Backman: For someone who grew up eating, breathing and dreaming everything. Star Wars When I was asked to create a Disney creature, it was a pinch-my-arm moment. The MandalorianBlurrg and Dewback stood out among others – Blurrg for the technical challenge of blending a live-action rider onto a digital creature, and Dewback for being an iconic piece of Star Wars canon – but frankly, every new creature request that comes across my desk is probably the most exciting. Being in the middle of the process of figuring it all out is the best place to be.
Blurg, Mandalorian, more
Fausto Tejeda: Blurrg The Mandalorian “This production, under the direction of VFX Supervisor Göran Bachman, produced an astonishing visual achievement. The meticulous work showcased the exceptional talents of our animators. Additionally, our team also contributed to the creation of some impressive creatures. Star Trek: DiscoveryThe tardigrades in particular required complex interactions with both the cast and the environment while conveying specific emotions. We also designed Molly, a large, complex alien creature that plays a key role in the storyline of Season 3. This project was a collaborative effort that we shared with other vendors and was truly a labor of love.
question: Tell us about the most amazing alien planet that you have featured in your project. What makes it so special?
Goran Backman: This may not be the most visually stunning example of an alien planet and its flora, but the desolate landscapes of Alvala and Nevarro are mesmerizing. At times we were in a distorted version of Iceland, at other times in vast muddy landscapes. The simplicity of the landscapes made them feel more real in a way. We always remained adamant about not over-processing the shots to make them look like perfectly framed environments. The most important thing in filmmaking is to portray the story as believable, so it’s important to carefully design the environments with that in mind.
Nevarro, The Mandalorian, more
Fausto Tejeda: This is a difficult question to answer, especially Star Trek: Discovery Over the past six or seven years, the show has featured a number of impressive planets, but the most memorable was Hollow Planet, featured at the beginning of season three. The planet is introduced in a sequence with a rocky exterior and huge shattered sections, culminating in a thrilling scene where a spaceship passes through an asteroid and enters the planet. Inside this hollow planet are huge floating rocks, each with its own unique fauna and flora, and an icy surface where the spaceship crashes. Bringing this environment to life required extensive collaboration across multiple departments, but it remains one of our favorite productions to date.
question: Which spaceship do you consider to be the most beautiful or special? And what story does it have?
Goran Backman: It’s hard to overstate how complex the Sarcophagus, affectionately called “Sarc,” was to create. Built by Pixomondo for Star Trek: Discovery Season 1, the Klingon ship was over 2km long with an exterior hull decorated with the coffins of Klingon warriors. With intricate detailing throughout, each section of the ship needed to be sectioned off in order to render efficiently. As well as building it, we also got to blow it up, which is always fun – some of us got into visual effects to do explosions.
Sarcophagus (ship of the dead), more
Fausto Tejeda: The Sarcophagus ship is one of our most remarkable achievements to date. The ship is a seamless blend of beauty, art, and technology, with hundreds of Sarcophagi embedded into a highly ornate hull covered in stained glass and patterns. The interior of the ship was just as detailed, and the working set was just phenomenal. Featured as the hero ship throughout season one, it is one of the largest ships we have ever created for Star Trek. Another standout ship was the Klingon Cleave ship. When it emerged amidst the explosions and battle damage, slicing the Federation ship in half, it was one of the most breathtaking moments on the show. Bringing these shots to life was extremely rewarding and a highlight of our work.
question: As a fan of your genre, can you share a “fan moment” you experienced while working on the project – a time when you felt particularly awe-struck or excited by what you were creating?
Goran Backman: One of my most memorable “fan moments” was when Disney The MandalorianEver since I was a child, I have been fascinated by the various creatures on Earth. Star Wars I’m particularly fascinated by space and, perhaps oddly, by the Dewback. It’s a creature you don’t see often, but maybe that’s why I’ve been so intrigued by it since I was a kid. When we at Pixo were asked to create the next version of this beast, I couldn’t help but think, “Is this really happening?” It was a surreal experience in the best way, and reminded me why I got into visual effects in the first place.
Dewback, Mandalorian, more
Fausto Tejeda: There are countless projects we have worked on, but there are a few that stand out in particular. Power RangerHaving seen some of the internal dailies for the 2017 reboot, it was exciting to see how the team brought the new world to life. Similarly, like many in our industry, Star Wars It was a great inspiration. The Mandalorian It was really inspiring. Additionally, working on virtual productions has given me the opportunity to collaborate with talented people like actor and director Jonathan Frakes, Star Trek It depicts space through modern filmmaking techniques.
question: Was there a book, movie, game, etc. that inspired you to pursue a career in VFX and how does that inspiration inform your work?
Goran Backman: I remember the moment I knew what I wanted to do in life. It was when I saw the T-1000 Terminator going through the bars. Terminator 2 It sparked a curiosity and love for visual effects that remains with me to this day. I was amazed by the seamless integration of CGI and live-action effects in T2 and spent many sleepless nights trying to learn everything I could about how it was done. No matter what career you want to pursue, it’s important to find what drives you. If you’re lucky enough to find it, you don’t have to go far to find inspiration to motivate you. I’m still amazed by the work of my colleagues and wish I had more hours in the day.
Fausto Tejeda: We live in an age where anything we can imagine can become a reality, and storytelling and writing are the true drivers of visual creativity. For me, it’s original ideas like: creator Innovative interpretations of classic works Sand Dunes It inspires me to push the boundaries of what can be achieved with traditional and cutting edge visual effects technology. Star Trek and Star Wars It’s an exciting time to be a fan as they tell new stories in different mediums and continue to push the boundaries of their worldview. What’s more, now that the software, hardware, and training are available to the general public, anyone with an idea can bring it to life and share it with the world through social media. It’s truly an amazing time to be alive, and to be an art lover.
