Tonight we mark the grand finale of Exandria Unlimited: Divergence. This is the latest Critical Roll miniseries exploring the history of an honorable setting featuring friendly faces from the entire world of critical roles veterans, tabletop celebrities and entertainment. Helmet again by Brennan Lee Mulligan, Diverge Founder of the important role of the stars Matthew Mercer (Final Fantasy VII play) and Liam O’Brien (Marvel Rival), with guest stars Jasmine Dong (Legend of Vox Machina), Alex Ward (Salem lot)and Seria Rose Goods (Star Trek: A strange new world). As a trekki and a huge fan of her work as Uhura, I jumped at the opportunity to chat with Celia about her experience on the tabletop and joining the world of Exandria.
1. How was it like diving into the world of Exndria?
Entering the world of Exandria was different from what I had previously had the opportunity to do. I’ve had a lot of experience playing in a strange new world, but the magic of Exandria Unlimited It was so new to me! I haven’t created any characters for a long time. I was able to make almost entirely my own decisions about the NIA’s motivations, desires, fears, and more. Brennan helped me a lot by fighting over my ideas, and Liam gave Ero such depth. He was a great lead to follow. Everyone at the table was very welcoming to my beginner energy. I feel fortunate that I am part of what Critters seemed to be really enjoying. I hope that as nia or someone will have the opportunity to come back as a completely different person.
2. I’ve played many tabletop games before, how did you prepare for Exandria Unlimited?
I have it! I played some D&D with others Star Trek Actor, the incredible Todd Staswick as our DM. I also played one shot Star Trek Adventures with friends from the Trekkie community. These games were familiar with the basics of D&D. The team in a critical role gave us lots of resources to get used to the world. But given the circumstances of our campaign, a lot of that was knowledge that my characters didn’t have. I had to refresh myself between episodes. Our lore keeper, Dani Kerr, was a godsend with a summary of her episodes.
3. Is your work on Broadway translated into your performance as Rainier “Near” Saff?
absolutely. Until we started filming, we didn’t know how similar the live theater and D&D live play were. The key role is very mental theatre and very improvisation. Get one 5 hour 1 hour take and you’re done! There is no repetition or hesitation. Learning how to work in an ensemble has also helped me a lot. You need to know when to return and make some moments happen without you, but since you are always “on stage,” it is essential to be captivated and aware of what is going on. Being part of Exu Divergence reminded me of how much I love the spontaneity of theatre. I missed the stage a lot.
4. Does he have anything in common with rei’nia? Is there anything you object to?
Rei’nai and I are similar and I think they are different. If Nia is a clergyman, Celia is definitely a bard. Nia has a faith I am still trying to find. I’m glad I was able to play a character who is still very optimistic about her future, which I am still very skeptical. We both love our sisters so much. That is our common denominator.
5. What’s your favorite moment so far?
I am so grateful to be part of every moment. It’s difficult to choose your favorite. The episodes feel like a movie, each with its own arc and emotional roller coaster. If I had to decide, my favorite moment on set was talking back with the cast. We are all very personal during filming. Talking, thinking about the personality and sharing feelings was a great way to put together some pretty emotional moments. These moments felt the water of the electrolytes I needed after a long training session.
