Two of Hollywood’s most celebrated talents team up for a gripping new thriller set in New York City. After decades of starring in a series of acclaimed films, Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver make their first screen appearance in Useful Idiots, a tense and stylish tale of power, privilege and danger.
Directed by Joseph Cedar and produced by Fifth Season and Black Bear, Useful Idiots follows Diane Castle (Streep), a veteran journalist who has covered New York’s luxury real estate market for years. Tired of profiling the city’s super-rich, Castle begins digging deeper into the sale of a record-breaking penthouse, but soon finds himself caught up in a web of corruption, deceit, and danger that threatens not only his career, but his life.
The script, written by Cedar Bar-On and Shachar Bar-On, introduces us to a shadowy oligarchy whose influence extends to Manhattan and beyond, supported by a complex network of enablers, fixers, and one ambitious young strategist.
The film boasts a strong production team behind the scenes. Fifth Season is financed and produced by Closer Media’s Zhang Xin, Jonathan King, Bruce Cohen and William Horberg. Graham Taylor, Christopher Slager and Dan Guando will serve as executive producers. Black Bear will handle international sales at American Film Market, with CAA Media Finance managing U.S. distribution rights.
Useful Idiots promises to deliver a sophisticated, character-driven thriller, anchored by two of cinema’s greatest performers and marking the historic first collaboration between Streep and Weaver.
