It’s time to get your sunglasses! Sony Pictures has tapped Bad Boys for Life and Bad Boys: Ride or Die screenwriter Chris Bremner to write the fifth installment of the Men in Black series.
It remains to be seen whether Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will reprise their roles as Agent J and Agent K, the alien hunting duo who starred in three of the series’ previous four films. But Bremner’s involvement may be particularly appealing to Smith, who also starred in the two “Bad Boys” movies he wrote. Sony previously attempted to reboot the series with 2019’s Men in Black: International, which featured Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson as new agents. Unfortunately, the film did not do well at the box office, grossing $253.9 million on a production budget of over $100 million. Nevertheless, with the series grossing over $1.9 billion overall, Sony clearly believes this property holds its value.
Bremner also wrote the mismatched comedy The Man From Toronto, starring Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson, which premiered on Netflix in 2022. He is also writing the screenplay for the Netflix film Fast & Loose, which is set to star Will Smith. The original “Men in Black” was released in 1997, shortly after “Independence Day,” and its success helped launch a blockbuster series with sequels in 2002 and 2012. Smith’s agency, Westbrook, recently announced a deal with Paramount, but Smith has kept a relatively low profile since the controversy surrounding his Oscar win.
Mr. Bremner is repped by WME and Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment.
Sony has not commented on this report. Deadline first reported that a new “Men in Black” movie is in development.
