Once upon a time, long before Maurice Sendak illustrated Where the Wild Things Are (1963) states: Ars TechnicalThe illustration first appeared in a scientific journal on atomic physics in 1947. Nuclear power for millionsSendak was 18 years old at the time and did the illustrations. His physics teacher was Hyman Ruklys He co-authored this text with Professor Maxwell Lee Aidinoff.

According to science historian Ryan Dern, “Sendak agreed to produce the story for 1% of royalties and received a $100 advance, equivalent to about $1,600 in today’s money” — not bad for a teenager making his first notable work.
