Acclaimed horror visionaries Jordan Peele and Sam Raimi have officially joined Universal Pictures’ newly acquired horror project Portrait of God. The film is based on a viral short film created by Dylan Clark that has garnered over 8.6 million views on YouTube since its release in 2022.
According to Deadline, the feature film adaptation will be co-written by Joe Russo and Clark. Although specific plot details remain closely guarded, the film is expected to significantly expand on the eerie mythology introduced in the original short. Peele will produce with Win Rosenfeld through Monkeypaw Productions, and Raimi will produce with Romelle Adam and Russo under Ghost House Pictures. Chris Rosati will serve as executive producer, with Sam Evenson serving as co-producer. Ghost House executive Jose Cañas and Universal’s Sarah Scott will oversee the project for the studio.
The original short story follows a devout young woman named Mia who uncovers a deeply disturbing answer to the question, “What does God look like?” Most of the story unfolds as she rehearses her presentation in the dark about a mysterious work of art known as the “Portrait of God.” According to Mia, while some viewers see only pitch black, others claim to see figures hidden in the shadows, with strikingly similar details each time. Sparse, eerie, and deeply unsettling, this short story reimagines traditional notions of divinity with a chilling edge and offers a stark warning to viewers.
