Songs for someone else’s wedding Following the release in 2004 “If You Need a Stranger (To Sing at Your Wedding)” he draws inspiration from Rekman’s own experience as a wedding singer. “I was happy to do it. That was an honor. In the 2010s, when streaming became difficult to make a living from music, wedding gigs became a financial way to get it, giving the music itself a new meaning.”
The Swedish singer-songwriter approached Levisan (Nick & Nora’s Endless Playlist) about working on projects together before the pandemic. “I’m a novelist with an interest in love songs, and Jens and I have been dealing with him ever since I reached out to him in 2005 after listening to his albums repeatedly while writing the book,” recalls Levisan. “I wanted to thank him for the soundtrack. We kept in touch for many years, and shortly before the pandemic, he got closer to a novel about an indie musician playing weddings. I was intrigued by it. In order to have a real collaboration, we suggested that we add a twist. The book, along with me, tells the wedding story first, and Jens must supply a couple’s song.
According to Rekman, the new song is “Is this the point of the story that lovers first meet? He continued:
I felt that the idea of creating a concept album for a story (rock opera?) was forbidden. For me, this is usually a sign that I am on the right path. While researching the genre of narrative concept albums, I realized that one of my favourite albums, Frank Sinatra’s Watertown is in fact it. This album served as inspiration as he has never become a fan of musicals or rock operas.
I wrote the album while the book was still written, and at one point I began to imagine what had happened between the chapters of the book. The book and album were intertwined and intertwined in the end, but I also found my own path. The book provided a story structure, but the album occasionally creeped up behind the scenes. Song stories appear in books and vice versa.
Rekman concluded: “This story is very important about relationships and how it is reflected through other people’s relationships and weddings, but more than anything, it’s a love story about music and its value, which has been devalued and turned into content by tech companies.
