“Gameplay is a total experience that includes graphics, player agency, animation, sound, and humorous spatial design. When these mesh together in an engaging and well-integrated way, I think it engages the player. It’s not just about the graphics.” But Tracy, professor and director of the Game Innovation Lab at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts Fullerton says it’s easy to understand why some gamers feel a little underwhelmed by the recent graphical leaps in big-budget games.
“Sometimes you want to play a character that looks exactly like a real-life athlete. I think there’s a kind of magic to that,” she explains, “but… [blockbuster] Games have also created a cycle of ever-increasing player expectations around radically different graphics technology. Graphics technology has very different prices associated with it. Sometimes the level increases [visuals] It certainly feels magical, but at times it feels unnecessary, and in some cases even too much. ”
Rashid Abdedeh, the Palestinian developer of the upcoming indie game “Dreams on a Pillow,” worries that games like “GTA 6” will create moments in which in-game violence approaches real-life acts of terrorism, war, and murder uncomfortably. “I think we already live in a very dark and chaotic world, and in that context it feels even more disturbing to develop a game that primarily revolves around realistic acts of murder,” he explains.
