According to Eurostatas of 2023, the European Union had dedicated high-speed rail lines of over 8,556 kilometers. However, the overall size of the European railway network has shrunk by 1.3% between 2013 and 2023. This is not a direction to address the challenges of the climate crisis, particularly when it comes to public transport linking small settlements.
UNIFE has identified three development areas: creating a unified European railway traffic management system, implementing next-generation future railway mobile communications systems, and developing digital automatic coupling technology. These initiatives are undoubtedly ambitious and, if implemented effectively, can change rail transport across the continent, particularly across cross-border rail vehicles.
One thing is certain, not only does Rails need development, but it also needs maintenance, and in an age of financial constraints, this awakens many people at night.
This episode was documented in Serbia’s Novi Sad, the site of a devastating railway disaster, urging debates to examine the extent to which whole body corruption contributed to the tragedy. The previous episode of Standard Time dealt with the wave of protests that broke out on November 1, 2024.
