On June 29 and 30, South Bend, Indiana will host an unprecedented event of major importance in the history of Catholic arts in the United States: a new full-length classical ballet production with a new story, new music, new sets and costumes, and a cast of approximately 50 nationally-renowned dancers. The fairy-tale ballet, “Raphaella,” was created by husband-and-wife team Duncan and Ruth Stroik in memory of their daughter, Raphaella Maria Stroik, a dancer with the Saint Louis Ballet who tragically died in 2018 at age 23.
In the first part, Tomas Milas interviews impresario Duncan Stroik about the ballet as a whole and the process of creating such a large-scale work, while in the second he interviews composer Michael Kreck and choreographer Claire Kretschmer about the collaboration between music and dance and the differences between classical and modern ballet.
