To remedy this, he installed fake trees that emitted frequencies that drove the creatures away from the construction site. The mayor’s tactic of scaring them into leaving is a subtle critique of the way we treat environmental ethics today. We may not destroy forests, but we will fragment them with roads and pollute the landscape to the point where it can no longer support life. By making the environment uninhabitable, rather than using direct violence, the mayor seeks to achieve the same exploitative objectives while getting away with the “crime” of destruction. Meanwhile, Mabel plans to join the Glade and its animals and fight for them.
