Imagine the surprise you saw in Season 4 hackthe amazing HBO Max comedy staring at Jan Smart and Hannah Einbinder, wanted to go to the internet to share the joys of the new season. People didn’t like it, especially at first. The fans were irritated. They wanted to know if someone else was as disappointed as they were and wasn’t enjoying the new season. I read these opinions out of curiosity. Because it’s good to expose ourselves to different perspectives and discussions about things we love and hate in life.
Imagine my surprise. The general complaint I encountered was a feud between Deborah Vance and the two main characters (played by Smart and Einbinder, respectively), caused by the power game that each played to end the third season.
I understand it on a basic human level that wants the story to be fun and happy. Deborah and Ava work best together. I want to see these two characters at its best. I want to be happy for them. It’s frustrating to see two people, who are clearly thriving as supportive forces, struggle separately instead. Conflicts make people feel uncomfortable, especially in comedy. Therefore, we can laugh and feel comfortable again, as we want to end the conflict.
However, there is this. hack life Conflict. This show thrives on it.
From the beginning, hack There is a clear premise that made it a success, and that premise relies on the conflict between Deborah and Ava. These are two women who have generational, moral, ethical and social differences at virtually every level. Essentially, the only thing that unites them in the first place, especially is that they both love comedy. Despite their approach, the harsh differences between them never change that much.
So conflicts stop at superficial differences quite early on. The clash between these two is because they are stubborn, strong-willed artists who believe in comedy and approaches to life, and feel an attractive need for people to prove they are wrong. Generation differences are less important for punchlines than strange rights and fashion choices. Deborah is a woman who fights hard to protect her place within a male-dominated industry, and Ava is trying to fight her way from the outside.
And yes, if Deborah and Ava are fighting the exact same thing they fought in Season 1, it’s just a season and Ava fight, that’s boring. There will be repeated conflicts hack A more boring show.
How some people present their criticism, you’ll think what it is hack I’ve been doing it in recent seasons, but it couldn’t be far from the truth. With each season, these two relationships evolve, which create new conflicts. With each season, Deborah and Ava’s combined efforts bring new victories that change and deepen both needs to protect the spot.
In particular, Season 4 sees the most vicious disparity between them after Deborah successfully campaigned for a late-night show, and continues attempts to abandon AVA’s backfien when the AVA threatens Deborah to his headwriter status.
There is no honest scenario where both women don’t have a deep grudge about how this happened. Ava feels deeply betrayed by Deborah breaking her words. Deborah feels a deep betrayal that Ava is threatening Deborah’s lifelong dream. This is the harsh rage that emerged from the fact that these two really really love each other, the kind of love that they know exactly how to make each other faster.
And it’s very interesting.
Why do you do that hack Do you continue to go back to conflict between these characters? Because their conflict is fun to watch the show. It’s the source of most of the best jokes and funny scenes. If it’s not directly from them, it’s from the people around them, like the HR women assigned to follow them everywhere, Jimmy, who has ever suffered, wants to work as a peacekeeping force, or is a writer’s room stuck in the middle of their feud. Part of Season 4 is easily ranked as my favorite among the entire show. Deborah and Ava are undoubtedly their most entertaining when they are their most despicable.
Are you really wrong just to have these two toxic effects on each other? clearly hack Often, rather than speaking the characters great as people, for the benefits of the show itself, and for the entertainment factors of the audience, for the entertainment factors of the audience? Let them go to each other. Let them be stupid and messy. Come back to them each other, always finding a reason to split.
Deborah and Ava are comedic versions of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. The two characters must always find reasons for conflict, but they will always find reasons for going back to each other. It’s the dynamic where the show is built.
I can admit that hack First half of season 4, Deborah and Ava go to some tough moments to sink into the depths and hurt each other beyond what they saw before. By the time we reach our interview with Ruby, Deborah will be driving Ava past the brink and quitting for good. hack What was enough was enough, and it was time to create peace. For me, it’s funny shows that are not afraid to be nasty and uncomfortable, and it holds too many things tightly in those emotions. hack I’ve always understood when to cut nonsense and integrate its protagonist into a shared goal.
Season 4 is the best version of this, as Deborah and Ava have taken things up to date. Throughout their fight, we see that Deborah and Ava still love each other. That’s why they’re so hurt. There is no real hatred there. They just can’t retreat because they want to “win” each other. As Deborah finally wins, she quickly backtracks because the victory paid her sacrifices.
And then there’s the moment when Ruby interviews and the $72 Branzino finally pushes him to quit Ava, that is, he finally sees the character’s growth from Deborah, who has been waiting since the show began. We see the woman who pushed away many of her loved ones, finally decides to compensate her before she does it again. Their scene on the beach at the end of episode 6 is the pinnacle of the show as a whole, with Deborah and Aba finally acknowledging what they mean to each other.
For example, if two people fight just for three episodes, or if they haven’t gone before, does this work? Maybe, but did you feel satisfied or meaningful? i don’t think so.
hack These bonding moments have always been handled really well. Because it was always aware where the line was, when to cross it, or rather not. The show knows when to cut conflict, or at least temper the two characters again, or at least temper. They also understand that the point of this relationship is that Deborah and Ava connect at a core level that continues beyond their fight. It’s a commentary on the human condition, and I don’t boil all of their fights into “superficial” differences, but ultimately it’s not important compared to the human connections that put them together.
This will not change in Season 5. Ava and Deborah inevitably oppose the way to reinvigorate her career, and they will fight about it. They have episodes in each other’s throats. One thing I can expect is that it’s not the same as their other splits. Or maybe I’m wrong. If this is the final season (it’s something I’m determined from what I understand), then you’ll get a unified Deborah and Ava to tear the comedy world apart to restore Deborah’s reputation.
Let’s say they hope Deborah and Aba find a reason for conflict. And, like the four seasons that preceded it, it is incredibly rewarding.
