This is one of the four-bedroom suites, and its corner location affords views of San Francisco Bay from two sides. However, the focus is on the walnut corner unit and its recessed TV. “This room projects a penthouse energy by suggesting that the dazzling view is secondary here,” Martin says. “At the same time, the chaise longue (with no backrest to block the view) shows that this view is not something to be messed with just yet.”

Located on Cape Town’s coast, this 5,800 square foot (539 square meter) apartment features a dramatic panoramic living room without the clutter. “Apart from the sunken seating area, this room is severely lacking in furniture. This is a space that doesn’t need to be described as a ‘penthouse’ by its décor; the exceptional location and architecture suggest that,” says Martin. For his part, designer Miminat Shodeinde is absolutely fearless in his use of stone, scale, and space.

Noting that Hong Kong’s topography is similar to Brazil, designer Joyce Wang Studio brought mid-century classics from the South American country and combined them with local wood and plantings. The effect is to greatly expand the relationship between indoor and outdoor greenery.
“It’s a different approach than what’s been used in other penthouses, and it’s been successful,” Martin says.
“This is a room in which all its secrets are never revealed at once. Joyce Wang’s use of detailed ceiling materials, different textures, and glass screens create mystery and a fascinating sense that there is more to discover here.”
