Almost every industry has found a way to integrate AI into their products and workflows in some way, and it was only a matter of time before game studios followed suit. Now, in a (not so) surprising move, the studios behind giant companies like Electronic Arts or EA FIFA and battlefield, joined forces with The creators of Stable Diffusion are shaping the role of AI in the next era of gaming. The two companies aim to “jointly develop innovative generative AI models, tools, and workflows that will enable EA’s artists, designers, and developers to reimagine the way they make games.”
Despite the continued backlash and debate surrounding the use of AI, companies don’t seem to be slowing down. From Google filling its search results with AI-powered summaries to AI-powered wearables, companies are focusing on bringing AI into everyday experiences. The latest to join that wave is EA, which is working with Stability AI to reimagine the way games are made. This new partnership between the two sides will look at how generative tools can help streamline EA’s creative workflows, “opening new doors for rapid prototyping and visual storytelling, allowing artists and developers to ideate, visualize, and refine gameplay experiences faster and at scale.”
Best known for its Stable Diffusion text-to-image model, Stability AI has already demonstrated how generative technology can help generate vibrant, photorealistic art. The company also offers a variety of 3D models, including Stable Fast 3D models, which allow you to create high-quality 3D assets from a single image. So it’s no surprise that the two companies would partner up to make game development a little easier. Stability AI and EA’s initial efforts will focus on using AI to create accurate “physically-based rendering materials” through tools that “generate 2D textures that maintain accurate color and light accuracy in any environment.” According to a press release, “The partnership will also seek to develop an AI system that can pre-visualize entire 3D environments from a series of intentional prompts, allowing artists to creatively direct the generation of game content with unparalleled speed and precision.”
It remains to be seen how much time this will actually save, or how polished AI-generated in-game assets will be in production, but it’s still a big step toward AI-assisted mainstream game development. Karol Mitra, EA’s Vice President of Creative Innovation, said: during the presentation. “Together with Stability AI, we are amplifying that creativity. Empowering artists, designers, and developers to dream bigger and build more.”
