Diiv is back with a new song, “The Return of Young People”the band’s first new music since last year Frog in boiling water. It was recorded after a fire in Altadena, California, which resulted in frontman Zachary Cole Smith being homeless. “Breathe Silent Hope/Unknown to the world/Learn Me/Learn Me/Learn Innocent and Foolish Path,” he sings on the track. Please check below.
In a long statement, Smith said:
Hello
Diiv has a new song, “Return of Youth” today. Sorry for the long statement
“Frog” was an album that turned our eyes out of the world around us. With confusion, disgust and adoration, I took a series of snapshots of our state.
The writing period for this album was part of a beautiful time in my life as we prepared and waited for our first child to be born. Its beauty was cut in a deep existential dilemma. How can I bring my child into this world?
Hope was a common thread that drove through the fragmented world of albums. We talked a bit about it. True hope, false hope, something to give meaning to your life. It’s a personal journey. I found it in a parent-child relationship, but you can find it wherever you want.
Before the birth of his son, “The Return of the Young” was written before a larger existential dilemma zoomed in until the frame was gone. If “Fender on the Freeway” finds peace in a giant macro pattern, this finds it in a mundane, simple micro. I imagined seeing myself through the eyes of my child. This is a revival that brings you to fear and anxiety and discovers beauty and tranquility in the simplest places.
Earlier this year, my family and I lost our home and everything we owned in the bushfires of Altadena, California. We were preparing for the birth of our second son. We lived in the beautiful world of the house we imagined in this song, and soon it was gone.
When I recreated this song and finally released it, I was forced to listen to it differently afterwards. What makes a house? Can you escape from the outside world? Is hope just a fantasy? Is someone actually ready to become a parent? How can I take my child into this world?
Once again, the big questions turned out to be irrelevant. I think you just keep living. Life occurs in the words of life.
Anyway, make songs and videos of whatever you want, although it’s more personal this time, it’s just a snapshot.
enjoy.
