Veteran singer-songwriter Dennison Whitmer has announced a new album. anythingproduced by and starring Sufjan Stevens. Release date is February 14th asthmatic kittyand features the previously shared track “Older and Free.” Another lead single “Focus Ring” will be released today. Check it out below.

Whitmer said of the album:

“Anything At All” is about doubling down on family time and doing everything we can to slow down the pace of life as things around us feel busier than ever. It’s important to have a system in place and commit to the changes needed to make it work. Asking unique questions is essential to that effort. Most of the lyrics on this album are about trying to find those answers. How can we create the world in which we want to raise our children? How can we create the world we want to live in? How can we create a community of like-minded people with similar goals? The title, “Anything At All,” refers to the way we express generosity to our friends, family, and colleagues. It comes from a phrase that is often said. We say, “If you need anything or if there’s anything I can do, please let me know.” I think most people (myself included) tend to express that emotion outwardly, but rarely inwardly. Reading this record, I find myself uncomfortably stuck between inside and outside. Originally, the title of the album was going to be “Focus Ring” and the title song was going to be “Anything At All,” but Sufjan and I both felt that “Anything At All” was a stronger title, so we ended up going with “Anything At All.” I ended up changing two things.

Stevens added:

This is the first time I have engineered and produced an entire album of songs for Dennison. We did a lot of it in my studio in the Catskills. It was a homey, casual space, not at all intimidating. So I think this song captures some of the isolated, private, casual nature of upstate New York. We also took time to work on coronavirus and adult life things, block by block, in between long breaks. So there was a sort of touch-and-go nature to the process. Nothing is rushed or pressing. There were so many big changes happening in our lives and the world around us that the song came to represent a kind of safe haven from it all.
