James Van Der Beek, the star of the American television series “Dawson’s Creek,” died on Wednesday at the age of 48 after a battle with colorectal cancer.

A post on his Instagram page read: “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed away peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith and grace.”

Van der Beek, who was married with six children, announced her cancer diagnosis in 2024.

He was best known for playing the main character, Dawson, in the teen drama of the same name, which ran from 1998 to 2003 and revolved around a group of friends living in a small town in Massachusetts.

Although he also appeared in the films Varsity Blues and The Rules of Attraction, Van Der Beek never truly established himself in the film industry as he struggled to separate himself from the legacy of Dawson’s Creek.

However, the actor insisted that he is happy with his career path.

“Overall, I don’t see my past as something to throw away and have worn with pride,” he told celebrity site Page Six in 2011.

An Instagram post on Wednesday showed a photo of Van Der Beek wearing a white top and cardigan. It was also shared by his wife Kimberly.

“He has much to share about his wishes, his love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. That day will come,” the post added.

“At this time, we ask for peace and privacy as we grieve for our beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
