According to vocalist Jacob Bannon, “Love Is Not Enough” “explores what it means to maintain empathy and compassion in modern society. It’s a reflection on who we are today and where we want to be in the future. If we can fight off the scavenger hunt.”
The album was recorded and mixed by guitarist Kurt Ballou at God City in Salem, Massachusetts. “I think there’s a lack of realism in a lot of contemporary music in all genres, but especially in our genre,” Bannon said. “Things either get distractingly raw and almost chaotic, or the band edits out every aspect of what they’re doing, sucking the life out of what they do. Sometimes the perfect take is the one with the wildest vibe. It’s not perfectly executed. There are a lot of powerful moments on this record, and a lot of angry moments. The realism amplifies that.”
Bannon added, “We’re doing things that we don’t do on other Converge records. It’s more and more. It’s definitely by design. Everyone interprets music differently and there’s no right way to do it, so internally we threw out dozens of ideas for sequences. We always joke that when we do that, everyone has to be equally unhappy. But this one worked.”
