Los Angeles band Cheekface has released a new song, “Hard Mode.” It follows October’s “Flies,” which featured Jeff Rosenstock. Check it out below.
Vocalist and guitarist Greg Katz said in a statement: “This song is about growing up and how awkward it can be. It’s also about growing up’s little brother’s self-awareness, which is not the same as growing up. It’s twice as awkward.” “The phrase ‘live life on hard mode’ is a phrase touring keyboard player AJ likes to say when he does something that makes a mundane task unnecessarily difficult. You reach for something in a clumsy way when you should.
Katz continued:
I think being in a band is generally a pretty hard mode activity. I think the beginning of this musical idea was that we wanted to do a dance song with a fast hi-hat beat. Mandy came up with a super syncopated bass line and then I added a chunky guitar riff that became the chorus. It started out as a really short song idea, maybe just two minutes long. But once the three of us started learning it, we developed it in the instrumental section because we found the groove fun and wanted it to continue.
This song also has an outro, but I’m not sure if previous songs have had outros, but it usually ends like that. But this year I was touring with Yungatita, and their song “Pick at Your Face” had a really witty outro. After listening to it every night for a month, we were legitimately inspired.
Earlier this year, Cheekface surprise released a new LP. organized.
