Big Little Lies is officially returning for the third season of HBO.
The acclaimed drama, which debuted in 2017 and quickly captivated audiences around the world, has been speculating about its future since Season 2 ended in 2019.
Well, finally, the story is moving forward. While the new season is still in production, Deadline reports that Amazon’s Mr & Mrs Smith Co-Creator Francesca Sloane will write the premiere episode and will serve as executive producers along with series creators David E. Kelley, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witerspoon. This development shows that a long-term third installment is finally underway.
Nicole Kidman dropped the hint in 2023 and this week Shailene Woodley declared “We’re so back,” which made Shailene Woodley even more excited in an Instagram post.
Francesca Sloane’s involvement shows the most specific steps towards the show’s comeback. The first season was taken from a bestselling novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, while the second season featured original materials created exclusively for the series.
Moriarty later wrote a follow-up novel that was due to be published in 2026. HBO has not officially confirmed whether the third season will directly fit the new book, but it is expected to affect future storylines. Fans are looking forward to more information as details are still wrapped.
Verified returns include Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. Shailene Woodley’s enthusiastic Instagram post, along with Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz, suggests that she is already on board. As for Meryl Streep’s character Mary Louise, there is no word yet on whether she will recreate her role. What’s certain is that Monterey Five remains at the heart of the series.
