They’re pulling from a playbook from thousands of years ago
Almost a 700 years ago, a Christian mob in Alexandria, Egypt, was stirred up by the bishop of Alexandria Theophilus, and dismissed and destroyed the giant temple of Therapis. Tens of thousands of books, remnants of Alexandria’s famous libraries, were delighted to be destroyed, not to mention the precious artifacts of Greco Egyptian history.
Ultimately, Therapis Temple proved too tempted the target for taking the biblical command to literally reject other gods.
Fast forward to 2025 and a similar threat (not at all) has emerged for free worship. The threat comes from people who call themselves Christian nationalists.
Of course, not all Christians are Christian nationalists. Certainly there is Christians against Christian nationalists An organization specializing in the separation of churches and states. (See below.)
Still, according to a survey conducted by the Institute of Public Religion conducted in late 2024, nationalists are growing, especially among Republicans, and among Republicans.
