“Art has always been important” – Abria Iyengar
Tonight marks the return of Critical Role campaign 4, This is an epic tale that represents the greatest story ever told by the Critical Role team. For the first time, Matt Mercer will be a player in this game. dimension 20 and Exandria Unlimited The chairman is GM Brennan Lee Mulligan. For Mulligan’s story, the CR staff also brought in new players: Abria Iyengar, Alexander Ward, Robbie Daymond, Whitney Moore, and Luis Carazo.
Here’s the story we know so far.
At the center of this story is Jaji Fang, hero to some and enemy to others, whose impending execution brings together various characters from his life. In a land still suffering from the aftermath of dead gods and living in the shadow of a tumultuous rebellion, these disparate peoples come together across the torn world of Araman and connect in ways never imagined.
As hope and victory fade, Araman is faced with a question. If there were no God, what feats would befall us now? And who or what will take the crown from us?
We live in a time of ICE raids, massacres of Palestinians, and people being arrested and imprisoned for speaking out. Everyone from musicians to actors to tabletop RPGs is wondering what they make in times like these. How do you create one? How do you weave a story of resistance when your neighbor might be detained by the secret police? For critical roles, campaign 4 There was no point in talking like that.
“We had a lot of conversations leading up to this,” said Critical Role creative director Marisha Ray, who also plays Murray Magneson. “When Brennan was presenting the world with the current situation in Alaman, a major turning point in this kind of society, there were a lot of influences that Civilization is still taking into account. They’re in the midst of it. It’s not necessarily a long-forgotten past. And of course, a lot of those themes revolve around resistance. It’s one of those things that is almost inevitable. The best art is influenced and references life. We never ran away from that” from that of Critical Role. We’ve always wanted to show that we can put our money to work in different ways and make these changes to our audiences and fandom through our stories. And I think that’s something that’s very valuable to us and that we try to hold onto something that we can set by example, even if it’s not in this fantasy world.

“When you’re not in the real world, sometimes things like this are easier to digest and easier to fit in your head,” said Alexander Ward, who plays Octis Taconis. “Putting them in a fantasy setting allows you to process them more precisely and make that change a reality in real life.”
The power of art as a messenger of change is part of Critical Role’s work through both advocacy (the performers are all union worker supporters) and philanthropy (the Critical Role Foundation raises money for Red Nose Day). Outright Action Internationaletc.).
“I think art exists to help us process reality,” said Abria Iyengar, who plays Tayshia Roy. Ursula K. Le Guin It’s the idea of building a revolutionary imagination within people. For example, how do you imagine a better world? You imagine it, you play in it, you model it. That way people can imagine better for themselves. Art has always been important. ”
The characters they chose all represent reactions to the world of Alaman. According to the cast, the reality of the setting naturally permeates into who they play at the table. And they are changed by the world as much as they change themselves.
“When we’re building a world that explores these themes, we can’t help but consider how these themes impact the characters,” Mercer said. “What are their current drives, where are they going, and as we explore those themes, we build something that feels not only exciting but true. I think it’s going to be a very challenging experience to not let that influence the way we build these characters and their relationships.”

Robbie Daymond, who plays Katigan Vale, said, “The build-up is great because it uses backstory, unlike a scripted play where you try to back-analyze a character’s motivations based on their actions.” “Instead, if you create a character whose basic personality is already determined, and then you do your best to inhabit that character, and then you’re presented with an improvised fictional moment…you surprise yourself, because if you were playing that character, It’s a really great social experiment, because even when you think you know how to act in a situation, there are a lot of moments where you’re surprised by the people around you. I think that’s one of the unique parts of being an actor.” It’s telling a bigger story that you don’t even know what it is. Creation is very important. ”
“That’s one of the reasons why tabletop RPGs are so good at understanding people’s empathy, right?” said Laura Bailey, who plays Thimble the Fairy. “Because you’re putting yourself in situations that you might not always be in or personally experience, so you can see what other people are feeling.”
According to Daymond, your ability to create and explore outside of yourself requires a certain amount of trust, even from your DM.
“I scared Brennan because I told him what kind of player I wanted to play with,” he said. “And he said, there’s a lot of pitfalls to that. And I was like, wait, wait, wait, put me in that world. Play. And I think we all go through that sometimes where you’re wondering how these characters are going to act. And you don’t know until you’re in that space.”
