Apochromatic Unlimited has announced the start of their Black History Month celebration. Like the previous year’s iteration, it will take place all month and feature a mix of panels and streams. The theme for this year is “Harlem Renaissance Forever,” a cross-time experience mixing real history with afrofuturism. The celebration, sponsored by Transplanar and Frivolous Bear Studios, will also benefit Lavender Rights Project.
According to Apochromatic Unlimited, “Harlem Renaissance Forever” is a “blending of time and place” that “celebrates the artistic and creative achievements that were strengthened as Black folk migrated from the American South to Harlem and beyond during the 1920s and 30s – creating a Black culture and era unlike any other.”
“We continue that indelible history ourselves, as we blend TTRPGs with our own unique set of talents now, and forever into the future, ” they said. “So whether your game takes place in the Harlem of 1922 or the Afro-Futuristic Mississippi of 3922, we encourage you to explore the themes as you and your fellow players see fit…Participation in the theme is optional for your table. If a classic sword and sorcery adventure is more your vibe, we welcome that too. As long as you come correct as your unapologetically Black self, you gon’ be alright!”
This year’s fundraising efforts will support the Lavender Rights Project, a Black Trans feminist non-profit dedicated to dismantling oppressive systems that disproportionately harm Black communities through legal aid, shelter, and advocacy. Aesthetics and trappings of pastoral and rustic life, with a full understanding of both the light and darkness of folklore, to experience the bringing together of outsiders into community with one another for communal healing and joy. Folklore has cultural power to teach lessons and build community. We are telling stories with these aesthetics that confront class conflict, radical compassion, and the supernatural as metaphors for how people interact with the natural world. Reflecting how unity in the face of oppression can uplift the disenfranchised to a state of higher being. Mind you this is a creative manifesto still in development. That is going to take years, but every creative journey starts with a first step. This theme is directly influenced by the musical genre of House, and the literary genres of Pastoral, Solarpunk, Cottagecore, and Hope Punk.

New York City has always been a magical place. But in the version we’ll be playing in, this detail is a lot less figurative. Beauty shops hawk glamours, pharmacies push cure-all elixirs, and when the moon isn’t there to light a human’s way, the parks become the domains of monsters and gods… Which is tough for our PCs because the swingingest rent party in Harlem has just started, and our friends better scoot if they want to make it. Normally, cutting through Central Park isn’t much of a shortcut, but time is a funny thing in the presence of gods, so this is their best bet to get there, but the cops ruin the fun. Tonewise, think The Martian or The Hunt for the Wilderpeople as opposed to The Revenant or 127 Hours. Like a light-hearted roadtrip/wilderness survival movie.
