Affinity Water’s so-called “smart meters” have become a nightmare for customers who have never asked for this. In one case, households paying each month suddenly find themselves staring at an impossible bill that exceeded £1,100 for a month.

For over a year, payments were consistent, first £23, then £38, then £42. Every time I paid, my balance should have been distorted, but that wasn’t the case. Instead, the bill was recalculated in a way that wiped out progress and accumulated more debts on accounts.

Then, in September 2025, I was shocked. Out of nowhere, the account balance rose by several hundred pounds, jumping to over 900 pounds. Neither explanation nor justification are the incredible numbers that ordinary households can expect after paying regularly.

The worst part? Customers didn’t even request a smart meter. Instead of imposing it and providing clarity and control, the water of affinity created chaos and left them trapped in debt they shouldn’t have. What’s sold as innovation looks like exploitation. Until Affinity Water explains whether a stable payment somehow causes a four-digit bill, it would be correct to call it a scam.
