Tonight, Critical Role Campaign 4 marks a major milestone: the end of the “overture” of the campaign. This means that starting next week, the cast will be split into three tables as part of the campaign’s ‘West March’ format. Each has its own focus as part of a larger story. The only table confirmed so far is the Soldier’s Table, starring Theor Pryde (Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), Wickander Halover (Sam Riegel), and Katigan Vale (Robbie Daymond). Seekers and Schemers haven’t been officially announced, but there are a lot of theories among Critters about how the other tables will be structured. Compared to the current setup, these tables develop their stories independently, but as part of a larger whole. According to the cast, they didn’t know what the other tables were doing when filming their table’s session…which means DM Brennan Lee Mulligan was the only one who really knew everything. And we all know how much Brennan loves secret knowledge.
But before they split up into their respective corners, it’s time for “Overture” to end on tonight’s episode. But why did they choose to use the term “Overture” for these four introductory episodes? Luckily, the cast was quick to associate it with their love of theater.
marisha ray: Honestly, like with naming conventions, the problem with Critical role is that if you say something three times, it sticks and exists in the world. it is beetle juice phenomenon. You have to be careful what you say.
But I think you got it right when you said it was operatic. In a not-so-similar sense, we get into a very long melodramatic type of story. What we’ve been doing has always been very similar important role To the live theater that Robbie had hinted at. But this was just an opportunity for us. We wanted to introduce everyone to our audience in advance. You need to understand that this will be very different from the previous three campaigns. Because in many ways, the audience knows far more about the various conspiracies going on around the world than the players at the table. And I think if you give them those little nuggets, like if something was mentioned at the soldiers’ table, the audience might have a better understanding of what it was referring to at another table that another group was working on. We just wanted to set the stage and set the scene before we got into everyone’s missions.
Sam Riegel, understandably, had his own ideas about what to call this introduction, and I think he was more influenced by his favorite takeout menu than by theater.
Sam Riegel:I guess I wanted to call it a pupu platter. It becomes like a sample of a theme or a character, it gives you a little taste of the world, and it’s very tasty. You want more, you want more poop, but you have to wait until the main course arrives.
alexander ward: Unfortunately, I only said it twice, so it didn’t really stick.
Abria Iyengar: We chose Overture because Pu pu platter’s SEO was very good.
