Enter the finale fallout The second season knew it would be impossible to resolve all the plot threads set up throughout this season in this final episode. Where the first season was operating in hopes of being successful enough to warrant a future, season two had full confidence that the show was capable of realizing that vision, and this season is spent laying the foundation for what’s to come.
Thankfully, we also got a banger finale full of great moments that lasted well into season three.
Looking at the entirety of the plot leading up to this final episode, we should have known that most of the various threads would be postponed to next season. Lucy and her father, the mind control chip, Cooper searching for his family and pre-war flashbacks, cold fusion diodes and House, the NCR and the Legion, the Brotherhood, the Enclave, the trio of vaults, the gnomes and the unfrozen supermanagers, and on and on and on.
I appreciate this because trying to handle all this in one episode would have been an impossible task. fall out It has been decided that he will be in charge of the finale. The show clearly didn’t feel any pressure to resolve everything, so the finale only took care of what needed to be taken care of, or at least what needed to be set up for next season.
Most prominently featured, as was the case throughout the second season, was Cooper/The Ghoul. This season has (arguably) focused heavily on him, and the finale is no exception. He’s still a grumpy guy, but this finale served to examine the journey he’s been on through the first two seasons and the changes that traveling with Lucy and Maximus has wrought in him.
He spends most of this episode with Robert House in his ear like a manic conspiracy podcaster, warning him of the dangers of the Enclave, of cold fusion diodes blowing up planets, and of how hopeless the world is. No one would blame the ghoul for giving in to despair and believing he would never find his family when he found an empty cryopod that was supposed to contain his wife and daughter. Maybe even if I didn’t find the Colorado postcard, I would have.
It is much better that this moment inspires hope in a man who has an unwavering confidence that his family is alive and that he knows where to find them.
It’s not their fault alone, but I think Lucy and Maximus remind Cooper of the man he once was, a man shattered by a betrayal we don’t yet fully understand. It is now known that he remained on good terms with Barb when Barb was “exposed” as a communist, and that the divorce was likely a ploy to protect Barb. But that means more questions remain about how exactly he became a ghoul, how he and Janie survived when bombs fell on Los Angeles, and how she returned with her mother to find the vault.
(However, many now theorize that Cooper intentionally turned himself into a ghoul in order to maximize the time needed to find them.)
More details will be revealed in due course, but for now, fall out gives a new purpose and sense of self to a man on his way to Colorado with Dogmeat by his side.
What will he find when he gets there? Despite this finale’s great efforts to portray the Enclave as the most powerful, the current power and influence of the Enclave remains ambiguous. We now know that Hank and Stephanie are both agents of the Enclave, and that Hank was working to send mind control chips to as many people on Earth as possible. It’s a safe assumption that they maintain some sort of power base in Colorado, and that’s where Ghoul ultimately finds himself and his family.
Lucy will have this nagging suspicion about everyone she meets from now on, and you can imagine that once she spreads the news to others, they will too. It remains to be seen how many of those chips will exist and how many secret Enclave agents will be able to activate them.
The mind control plot has obvious similarities to the plot of Fallout 4, where everyone suspects it’s a synth. One of my favorite things about this show so far is how it weaves elements from all the major games into the story. you have fallout 3 Lucy is trying to find her father, fallout 4 Among the ghouls looking for their families, fallout 2 Enclaves issue water chips. fallout 1 Located in Vault 33, there is clearly a New Vegas influence in the Season 2 setting. The only plot element that is practically missing is the exploration of the GECK system.
The show does a great job of pulling interesting ways out of the franchise, and fans can look forward to what’s next. fallout tactics We need hints for season 3, at least the Colorado part.
Lucy’s initial search for her father ended, at least in this season’s finale. With Diane Welch’s head killed and the influence of her personality removed, she at least succeeded in breaking her father’s control over those within the corporate coffers. She has an amnesiac father who seems able to manipulate her into doing whatever she wants, which is a ridiculous plot setup for next season.
Lucy has been tested on just about every front since finding her way to Earth, and it will be interesting to see how those experiences impact her approach to Hank. However, while I like the concept, I wish we had seen a little more Lucy, or at least a Lucy in more control, in this finale.
In general, I feel like Lucy was put on the back burner for too long throughout season two. She was definitely the main character of this piece. fallout In the first season, he ended up being the most passive of the three main characters in the finale. I don’t even know what she did to Diane Welch’s head. Later, she only gets rescued by Hank because the ghoul happens to be on his way to find his family, and then she has her father one-up her once again by activating the chip himself, robbing her of a satisfying choice regarding her destiny.
This was the trend throughout fallout Second season. She spends a lot of time being captured by people. She is captured by legions, sedated by ghouls, and imprisoned by her father. Every step of the way, we got a more passive arc rather than an active hero version of Lucy.
I’m fully aware that this is a point in her arc, as the Mojave and vast wilderness teach her the reality of those around her. The problem is that she feels less important overall compared to Ghoul and Maximus. Maximus also spends a lot of time this season encountering danger, but continues to actively participate in the direction the character is taking, such as punching a Brotherhood paladin in the head to save his children and stealing a cold fusion diode.
Maximus also battles multiple Deathclaws in brutal NCR power armor, dealing damage with missiles and wristblades, leading to the kind of epic finale moment I wish Lucy had. Even if it fails, he gets the ultimate heroic moment by brandishing a roulette table and a pool cue, losing hopelessly but willing to die if the NCR doesn’t save him.
(Speaking of NCR, that’s enough! It was perfect for the Rangers to appear at exactly the same time as the opening of New Vegas.)
Overall, both Maximus and Lucy’s arcs suffered a bit this season. Between the pre-war flashbacks and the current Ghoul adventures, that’s how much importance and screen time Cooper was given. I know ghouls are the most popular characters, but fall out was mainly catering to viewer demand, and we hope this doesn’t continue in season 2. Lucy is a big reason why I enjoy this show, and I want more of her, not less.
Thankfully, both Lucy and Max are in a position to play pivotal roles in what appears to be the third major conflict between the Legion and the NCR for control of New Vegas, and House still seems to be lurking in the background, intervening when the opportunity arises.
The same was true for Norm, who began to transition into more of a protagonist role, but lacked the screen time to realize the full potential of his storyline. I liked all of his scenes this season, and even though it was a bit anti-climactic, I enjoyed watching Radroach slaughter all the idiots in charge of Vault 31. It’s just a shame that so many interesting concepts and plot beats were introduced through his plotlines and none of them really served this season.
The same problem occurred in Vault 32 and 33, even though Steph rose to an interesting rank. fall out character. I could devote thousands of words to dissecting the revelation that she and Hank were married and both Enclave agents and how that rewrites the dynamic between her and Lucy.
Unfortunately, I feel the same way about gnomes. Vault 32 and 33 have plotlines that would benefit from more time and attention. fall out You can’t accomplish that in just eight episodes. The show couldn’t even find the time to give Lucy and Maximus enough attention, let alone the supporting characters or the plot.
The entire Super Mutant Resistance was introduced in just one scene. Legion appeared early on and disappeared until the finale. After Maximus ran, the Brotherhood left and didn’t return until the finale’s post-credits scene, which is the only post-credits scene of the season, so it’s very easy to miss.
fall out is a busy, hectic show, and according to the Maximus actors, it’s easy to see how they plan five seasons. However, merging the storylines again would benefit the story, as we expect to see Maximus and Lucy together in Las Vegas during the war between the Legion and the NCR. Bringing Norm and Claudia back to Vaults 32 and 33 allows us to focus on three subplots between them and Cooper in Colorado.
When you expand on all of this, I liked the second season quite a bit, but it ended up being somewhat disjointed. I hope you move forward fall out Either release eight or more episodes per season or condense the plotline.
