Geek Love is a book that will stay with you for a long time, either as a cautionary tale or a terrifying nightmare.

Katherine Dunn really captures some of the biggest problems humanity faces today: how shallow our values are causing us to rely on appearances and neglect to value real, personal experiences.

It’s a question that many have asked, and one that even more have dreaded.

If you’re looking for a book about circus eccentrics, Geek Love is one to pick up. It doesn’t focus on the circus itself, but the eccentrics part is enough to get you started.

There are two stories. One is about Artie starting a cult whose members mutilate themselves, called Arturism. To find PIP (peace, isolation, purity), sacrifices must be made. Members start with small parts, like their toes, and work their way up.

The second story is about 19-year-old Miranda, whose mother, Oli, was inseminated by Artie’s sperm.

A girl born with a tail becomes popular at the fetish strip club where she works, until a wealthy woman convinces her to cut off her tail in order to realize her full potential.

It turns out that a wealthy woman named Rick encourages attractive women to harm themselves because she believes their good looks are driving them away – whether she means well or is trying to reduce the number of women more beautiful than her is up for debate.
