universal pictures9. EPiC: Elvis Presley Concert
When Baz Luhrmann was researching an Elvis biopic, he unearthed dozens of boxes of unreleased documentary footage. Much of it concerns Presley’s stay in Las Vegas after his 1968 comeback special, and included interviews, rehearsals, and hours of outtakes from two 1970s concert films. Luhrmann is now restoring and editing this footage to create an entirely new concert film, which may prompt a reassessment of Presley’s subsequent career. Seeing EPiC is like going to “the best concert I’ve ever seen.” Owen Gleiberman promises on variety show. “This film is a revelation, because in 96 minutes it shows us just how obsessed Elvis Presley was when he first started performing live in Las Vegas from 1969 to the early ’70s…The power of Elvis’ voice was undiminished, soaring, quivering, caressing, echoing, swaying, making every note resonate with unparalleled beauty.”

In director Michel Franco’s dark romantic drama, Jessica Chastain plays a wealthy San Francisco socialite who runs a charitable arts foundation in Mexico. On his last visit to Mexico City, she had a passionate affair with a dancer played by Isaac Hernandez (a real-life ballet star), so he thinks she’ll be happy when he sneaks into the United States in the back of a truck. But he soon learns that philanthropy has severe limits. For her, supporting the arts in another country is completely different from interacting with people of different nationalities and social classes in her own hometown. “Harrowing, gruesome, and shockingly dark. [Dreams has] The thrilling and gruesome socio-political aspects will leave audiences breathless.” Matthew Turner says in The Next Best Picture. “The combination of great performances, pulse-pounding eroticism and shocking critiques of the super-rich makes this a must-see.”
