John Davidson suffers from Tourette syndrome, a movement disorder that forces him to make offensive comments at the worst possible moments. He was awarded an MBE in 2019 for his awareness-raising work in Scotland, but at the award ceremony he lashed out at Queen Elizabeth II. Written and directed by Kirk Jones (Waking Ned, Nanny McPhee), this moving biopic shows how difficult Davidson’s life was, but also sweet and optimistic. Robert Aramayo (Rings of Power) won the BAFTA Best Actor award over Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio, but when Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage, the real Davidson unintentionally shouted a racial slur, overshadowing the film’s success. “Kirk Jones’s terrifyingly warm and generous film includes a wonderful performance from Robert Aramayo, full of intelligence and charm.” Peter Bradshaw says in the Guardian:. “This is a fascinating and thoughtful film.”

universal pictures10. Michael
Michael was one of the most controversial films of the year. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), the film is a biopic of Michael Jackson (played by his nephew Jaafar Jackson) and follows his life from child stardom with the Jackson 5 to conquering the world as the self-proclaimed King of Pop. The project has been plagued by delays, reshoots and questions about sexual abuse allegations against Jackson, which the estate has rejected. But since producer Graham King also produced Bohemian Rhapsody, it could end up being a bit like Michael’s Queen biopic, the controversial Oscar-winning hit. ”[Jackson was] A mysterious, eccentric and shockingly talented man, he is perhaps the most famous entertainer on the planet. ” Dr. King said this at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. “Yet, behind the relentless scrutiny, accusations, and harsh media spotlight, he was just a man. A man who lived a very complicated life. The film explores all of that.”
Released overseas on April 23rd and 24th
