The following works are by the 13th century poet Rumi and contain within them the core essence of many spiritual traditions around the world. The teachings themselves may seem simple, but the most powerful always do
Everything that happens to us in this life, good or bad, holds a lesson if we pay enough attention and give it our all. As Pierre used to say, “Everything is a gift.”
The Guest House
This human is a guest house.
New arrivals every morning.
joy, depression, spite,
some momentary consciousness comes
As an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and enjoy everyone!
Even if it’s a crowd of sadness
someone who violently cleans your house
The furniture was empty,
Still, treat each guest with respect.
he might be wiping you out
For new joy.
Dark thoughts, shame, malice.
Welcome them at the door with a smile.
Be grateful for whatever happens.
Since each was sent
As a guide from the other side.
— Rumi
