Extraction: What is Enlightenment?
Enlightenment is the perception that I am free forever and is the pinnacle of human evolution. Everything works against it. Those who pursue it with one point of devotion are salmons that swim upstream in the powerful rivers of life. (Ref 416)
The purpose of my new book’s self-exploration is to explain how to find a teacher who can teach Advaita. But the first question you need to answer is, “Why do you want a teacher?” Perhaps you would say you want to acquire “enlightened” or “self-realization” (don’t forget the capital “!). So you need to make sure you know what the awareness is (and the teachers know this too!), and you need to see how you should “get” it.
“What is Awareness?” It was the title of a journal published by an organization that was called “Moksha Foundation” at the time and was launched by teacher Andrew Cohen. At the beginning of the first issue, he said:
I have continued to discover that there is so much confusion, misconception and misinformation about what the Enlightenment really is and what it actually means. That is why this publication presented an ongoing investigation of this question as this publication, and encouraged it to be launched as a means of sharing findings with those interested in this vast and most nuanced subject. (Ref. 539))
This must be one of the peaks of irony as he was embarking on a massive exercise of disinformation to spread considerable confusion about the topic! In an interview on the first page entitled “Passion for Death,” he says:
Enlightenment is a conscious condition that we know that we have finished what we become. To be fully enlightened means coming at the end of evolution. It’s the end of the possibilities of evolution. Even those who get a brief glimpse into what enlightenment is have the suggestion of finality as I am talking about. It’s the finality factor that I know is so extraordinary and very difficult to explain to people who haven’t tasted it. (Ref. 539)
This is hardly similar to the Mok explained by Advaita. But that would clearly be an important effect in the West for seekers who want to know about non-duality. The journal was published quarterly until August 2008, with 41 issues published, and the name was changed to “Enlytinennext (Evolutionary magazine)” for six more issues.
The title changes as his teachings evolved further into what he calls “evolutionary enlightenment.”
Evolutionary enlightenment is about ecstasy, which forces us to create a future. And it is not the future that unfolds by itself while we return to sleep. We are a future in which we build difficult ways through direct, conscious and intentional engagement with the life process itself. (Ref 540)
The truth of our existing existing freedoms from all kinds of restrictions is a tragedy that we should strive for future imaginary achievements! When I try to emphasize again and again, enlightenment is all I can do to understand that it is already the case. It has nothing to do with “evolution” into some superior beings with a higher consciousness.
When we recognize our nature, a deep inner healing process begins to occur. We can see unconscious patterns regenerate, and as we become more consistent with higher consciousness, limiting beliefs and destructive behaviors begins to fall naturally. (Reference 591))
This is Stephen Wingate, from the introduction to his book, The Rutrageous Myths of Enlightenment.
What are self-realization, awakening, liberation, and enlightenment?
You are the only self, the very perception. Stop now and realize this presence of the realization that you are. Note that you are spacious, open, awake and free. Note that these words arise in this spacious and openness. Note that mind, emotions, sensations, experiences, everything occurs naturally and spontaneously within you, and there is this spacious and open presence of consciousness.
This peaceful, loving, spacious and openness is yours. This spacious openness is the self, liberation, awakening, enlightenment, peace and love you have sought.
You are always and always this. (Ref. 502)
This explanation does not tell you what enlightenment is. “Simply This” is a modern Satsang attempt to tell us what we are. But it doesn’t tell us anything about how we come to realize what we are. “Enlightenment” is not the “entity” of that truth, but the realization of truth. And, more importantly, what is in the present is “open” to what is presented by the senses, completely vigilant and mentally calm, not who we are truly in. It simply tries to show that the mental device is ready to attend someone who explains who is who. “Peaceful, loving, and other good words you might think along these lines are related to mental attitudes: they are not self, but explanations of the mind.
Francis Lucille has issued the following statement regarding ego status (discussions regarding AJ?ti v?da):
When we say that ego does not exist, it means that it does not exist in itself as an autonomous being. This object cannot see its awareness of viewing it. The only possible logical reasoning is that this consciousness sees itself. When this reasoning becomes a real experience, we call it enlightenment. (ref. 707)
It is convenient to think of egos as “processes” rather than objects. The process of the mind is possible only for consciousness. The idea of consciousness “see”, “know”, or “experience” itself is common, but it doesn’t really make sense. This is a “mixture” of absolute reality and the appearance of the world.
Neo-Advaitins simply says that enlightenment is a myth. In reality, there are no people, so it is impossible for someone to be enlightened. For example, Halina Pytlasinska said:
Enlightenment is truly a myth. The viewpoint of non-duplexity, or oneness, is that it goes beyond words. So we do our best with words to get closer to it, but we don’t fully explain it in words. The myth about enlightenment is that there could be a special enlightenment person or a guru. No one will be enlightened! However, there is a perception that there is no separation. No one has been enlightened. There is a perception that there is no separation. (Ref. 573)
Neo-Advaitins frequently use expressions such as “aware”. “You can see that,” etc. It never explains where perception “occurs” or where “see” occurs. Distributions to that person will distribute seekers and gurus, and exempt the expected teacher from providing some kind of education. It’s very beautiful, really…
