I’m looking for God
John Robinson
I was extremely annoyed in search of God on the dry, dusty dirt roads high in Los Gatos Hills, which stifles the hot summer days. The spiritual hideaway that brought me here was good, but I wasn’t getting what I wanted. I continued walking, climbing higher and higher, “God, where are you? Where are you? Where are you?” Suddenly, I felt something and stopped on my own truck. Consciousness was surrounding me now. Space was alive, woke up and knew me. At that time I knew that consciousness was not just me, I was in it, and that it was God’s consciousness. Simply put, my consciousness was God’s consciousness. This stunning realization announces the heart of mystical experience – divine consciousness permeates the existence and calls us to awaken to our own divinity.
I have written and taught mystical experiences for over 25 years. There are 12 books and numerous articles and workshops on the nature and power of this universal experience. At the age of 75, I felt that I needed to disappear into loneliness, in order to live more fully in the mystical consciousness I had written about. So I did it. Three years! As I grew more experienced, I began to spontaneously write mystical poems in the traditions of Hafez, Rumi, Kabir and Gibran. Hundreds of poems have come out, but they still continue to come from deep in the God’s abode of my soul.
I think that everyone can experience the existence of God, and that mystical poems have the power to awaken that insight and revelation. Produced from mystical consciousness, the words and ideas of this poem genre live with the spirit. They are creatures who act within you if you allow them. You will transition from receiver to participant, mystic. Once you enter the poem, the poem enters you and gradually transforms your overall direction towards the God’s universe.
Here are three poems to awaken your consciousness. Before reading them, find quiet, uninterrupted, meditative moments and use words, prayers, intentions, or illuminated candles to create a sacred space for receiving your poems. When you’re focused, centred and ready, read the words slowly. Whisper loudly if necessary. It will continue to exist. Experience each line in full and allow it to sink in for a little while between reading. Let’s get started…
A consciousness
God’s consciousness fills the universe.
Everything expresses it inclusive.
The world is alive, awake, aware,
Loving and breathtaking intelligent.
We each share this awareness
We wrap it up with a personal identity
Let’s assume everyone’s version is unique.
What does this mean?
This means you have direct access
God’s consciousness.
This is not possible just by realizing it.
Start waking up.
Find your sacred path
If you want God’s life,
Be aware of consciousness,
Others will find your eyes,
Feel in your body,
I love you through your love.
Your consciousness is already enlightened.
I’m experiencing this
Make your life sacred,
All the details transformed by beauty,
Because God is a holy essence
Your neighbor, lover, children, friends
Pets, plants, moon, sun,
Blessed whole earth.
This is the world of God.
Spreading peace and love,
Find the sacred path in your life.
It starts where you are standing.
Step into the mystery
Stop thinking.
Please stop.
Breathe slowly.
Wake up violently
I know what you are
In particular, light and shadow are constant
Transform the surface of the world.
Just like you look into every little thing
I’ve never seen it that clearly.
Now I’ll turn my consciousness back to myself
Feeling that God is breathing you,
Become you,
Become creation.
Whisper your secret name for God,
And love rushes from within,
End all the confusion about why you’re here.
Enter heaven on earth.
I’ll stay for a while.
Sit for another minute or two in the silence of mystical consciousness. I feel its continuous presence and feel it intuitively. Then write a little about your experience. You may be inspired to start your own mystical poem. Once you’re ready, you’ll return to your everyday consciousness and resume the day’s events.
Conclusion
Meister Eckhart, the great Christian mystic, said, “The only thing God asks about is to make God in you.” Realise that God is your consciousness, dissolve your self-idea into yourself, and delve into God’s mystery. Life in the world looks very different from here.
