Rediscover yourself: don’t let your past determine your future
You Are Not Your Past by Charlene Green
It’s easy to reminisce about events in your life that you’re not very proud of, or situations that happened in the past that make you look back and think, “I could have done better.” One day, as I was walking down memory lane, I started to notice changes in my body when a not-so-good memory comes to mind. I realized there was a direct correlation between my thoughts and the chemicals released in my body. My heart starts pounding, and sometimes I start to feel sick. I notice anxiety creeping up. As I began my studies and discovered mindfulness and spirituality, I learned how controlling my thoughts and emotions shapes my reality and wellbeing.
For years I identified as a victim of physical abuse in a past relationship and subconsciously made decisions based on what I experienced during that time. Some of my decisions were good and some were bad, but it wasn’t until I realized that my life up to that point was a reflection of what I wanted others to think of me, rather than who I truly wanted to be.
Being raised as a Christian, I was always praying. I can truly say that it was this that led me to spirituality. Growing up in the church from the age of 4, I knew what the Bible teaches, but spirituality was never spoken to me. It wasn’t until I began to seek healing and better health that I truly embraced spirituality. I decided that who I am is not determined by what I have done or experienced in the past, and in that moment, I experienced a rebirth. I was no longer responding to the calling of my past, but creating my future life by calling to my highest self. I began to practice mindfulness, paving the way to the spiritual calling of the one true source that sustains us all. Here are some practices that helped me shape and transform my life:
- Meditation – Meditating daily has helped me quiet my mind and focus on where my soul is leading me.
- Practice gratitude – I started making a list of things and people I am grateful for and focusing on those. What we focus on only expands, so it is beneficial to focus on what we want rather than what we don’t want.
- Goal setting – Keeping a journal and writing down your goals is a great way to prioritise what you want to achieve.
- Positive Quotes – Saying positive words first thing in the morning is a great way to start your day on a positive note and affirm who you are and what you are capable of. It empowers your thoughts and words. What you believe is what you become.
- Love and Prayer – Loving ourselves is a direct reflection of the infinite source. Prayer is a vital force we can turn to for help and guidance throughout our lives.
Life is not a courtroom, it is a classroom, and everything we experience can be a lesson in how to be a beacon of light and love.
