Enabling the return of 280,000 people
“Nothing symbolizes the devastating legacy of war more than landmines and unexploded ordnance. Landmines and unexploded ordnance have terrorized people in dozens of countries for decades.” British non-profit Halo Trust recognized the need and responded. They have been removing landmines from conflict sites around the world for many years. This includes Sri Lanka, which ended a 30-year civil war in 2009. HALO immediately began assisting in the clearance of unexploded ordnance and recently announced that it had cleared 300,000 mines from a wide area. “Thanks to HALO, more than 280,000 former internally displaced persons have now returned safely to their homes and most of their land has been cleared.” Halo’s Sri Lanka Operations Manager said, “Today, I am proud to be part of the team leading the mine clearance effort. Reaching the milestone of 300,000 mine clearance is not just a number, it means lives saved and land returned to communities.”
