Meditation… using a sleep mask?

meditation mask

Something I’ve been experimenting with lately and really enjoying is meditating with a meditation mask.

Why am I doing this and what the hell am I talking about?

Let’s take a closer look here:

What is a meditation mask?

A meditation mask is essentially the same thing as what is usually called an eye mask or sleep mask.

Sleep masks are most commonly used to block light from your eyes to promote deep, restful sleep.

This article focuses on meditating with a mask… but if you don’t already sleep in a really dark environment, you might also want to consider a sleep mask. Here’s why:

Benefits of sleeping in complete darkness

Simply put, your body is programmed to sleep when it gets dark outside.

When it gets dark, the pineal gland is activated and the brain starts producing melatonin.

Melatonin is a hormone that helps you fall asleep and stay asleep.

However, even small amounts of exposure to sunlight or artificial light during sleep can inhibit the production of this important hormone.

Therefore, sleeping in the dark (which can be achieved by using an eye mask) not only promotes sleep, but also a healthy pineal gland.

Now this is where things get really interesting.

The pineal gland is located at the center of the mind’s eye and is responsible for spiritual vision as well as higher states of consciousness, intuition, and even enlightenment.

And while the pineal gland is activated by sunlight during the day, it requires complete darkness to maintain balance.

So…why wear a meditation mask?

Now, you can see why sleeping in complete darkness is so beneficial. Next, let’s take a look at meditation in the dark.

I’m sure you’ll love it. Here’s why:

Meditating in the dark is nothing new. Meditation in dark rooms and dark caves is a practice practiced by sages and spiritual seekers for thousands of years.

In the advanced practices of Taoism and Tibetan Buddhism, “dark retreats” are used to stimulate the natural production of DMT in the pineal gland and brain, leading to expanded and transcendent states of consciousness, clear vision, compassion and It evokes feelings of togetherness.

Darkness retreats usually involve days of total darkness, but simply meditating in complete darkness brings awareness to the benefits of letting go of outward focus, letting go of attachment to the body, and letting go of concentration. can be directed. By doing so, you can truly clear your mind, enter the inner realm, and experience a deep connection with the infinite, God, the angels, and the higher realms.

Complete darkness is also healthy for the pineal gland, which can trigger the release of “dream chemicals” while you’re awake during meditation. This means that during waking meditation you can travel to higher realms with clear vision, clairvoyance, and open eyes.

Of course, it takes practice to enter a deep meditative state and fully activate the pineal gland with or without an eye mask, but you may want to try an eye mask during your meditation practice.

How to choose an eye mask for meditation

There are many options when choosing an eye mask, but based on my experience and research, there are three main features to look for.

  1. The mask should be contoured to take pressure off the eyes and allow the eyes to open and close without rubbing against the mask.
  2. Eye masks must completely block light, as any light leakage will reduce their effectiveness.
  3. You want a comfortable eye mask that allows you to forget about it and disappear into the void and oneness with the infinite.

Meditation eye mask I use

Before buying an eye mask, I did a lot of research to find the best one. I travel a lot and sleep on my side and back, so I wanted to buy an eye mask that I could use for both sleep and meditation.

For this I went along Dream Essentials Escape Sleep Mask.

Dream Essential Eye Mask Review

Dream Essential Escape Sleep MaskDream Essential Escape Sleep Mask I have a hard time tossing and turning with this mask and have woken up several times in the morning without it on…but I really like it for both meditation and sleep.

It completely blocks out light and can be worn comfortably while sitting, lying on your back, or lying on your side.

It has a nice texture and is comfortable on the skin. The mask is easily adjustable with an elastic Velcro headband and has eye-friendly indentations, but your eyelashes will rub against the mask a little.

I didn’t buy this mask because there were some bad reviews about the fabric part around the nose being too thin and letting light in… This part of the mask is definitely flimsy, but I don’t have any issues with it. I found them to be very comfortable and do a good job of blocking out light when tightened snugly.

It also comes with a carrying case and earplugs… To be honest, I haven’t used either of them, but they seem to come in handy when traveling.

mindfold eye mask review

mindfold sleep maskmindfold sleep mask The second meditation mask I purchased was Mindfold sleep and relaxation eye mask.

This mask has deep eye cavities so your eyelashes won’t rub against the mask and your eye makeup won’t get smudged. 🙂

The front of this mask is hard plastic, which won’t bother you at all while meditating…but if you try to lie down and sleep with the mask on, it won’t be comfortable.

The inner lining is made of porous foam, which felt cheaply made when I first took it out of the package, but it actually works well and seems to be durable.

When I bought this mask, I thought it would be a great mask for meditation, but now…

However, when I first used it, the bubbles in the mask were a little too narrow and felt like it was pinching my nose, which was quite uncomfortable.

I ended up cutting out the foam with scissors, which worked fine and made the mask very comfortable.

I did have to trim the mask a bit, but I like and recommend the Mindfold Meditation Mask and Back Sleeper, but if you’re just looking for a sleep mask and sleep on your side, it’s probably not a good option. there is no.

Have you ever tried meditating while wearing an eye mask?

I don’t think an eye mask is necessary for a very enjoyable meditation, but I do like wearing one and will continue to experiment with it.

Overall, I think it’s a great way to rejuvenate your senses, support your pineal gland, and take a break from the constraints of normal daily life. If you get the mask and try it out, be sure to comment below and tell us about your experience.

With love, light and gratitude
