Yoga Sutra Practice This book by Carol Ann Friedman combines clear explanations of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras with prompts for personal discovery and reflection. The concise instructions and explanations that the Yoga Sutras provide are still as powerful as ever and invaluable on the journey to inner peace and self-knowledge. The practice of the Yoga Sutras also allows room for personal reflection and writing self-study notebooks.
I recently had the opportunity to speak with Carol Ann about her book and the practical ways we can apply her teachings and the Yoga Sutras in our daily lives. She shares her insights into specific groups of Sutras such as Samyama, Abhyasa, and Vairagya and how they affect our attitudes and behaviors. She also talks about her career as the owner and yoga teacher of Ashtanga Yoga Charlottesville and Ivy Yoga School.
I’ve been practicing yoga for almost 11 years now and found her insights into yoga and the Yoga Sutras to be practical and ways to enhance my yoga practice and deepen my connection to my spiritual self. One of my favorite parts of my conversation with Carol Ann was when she talked about how we can deepen our yoga practice by focusing on the spiritual aspects of yoga. She clearly explains how yoga not only affects the physical body, but also the mental and emotional levels.
