An interview with Blair Sorrell, author of “Smith’s Schizophrenia: How to Over-Promote“
1. What inspired you to write this memoir? What did you want people to understand?
I wanted to enhance my profile in this state, but I felt that was the best use of my writing. My hope is to eliminate schizophrenia personality disorder (SPD) completely or fine-tune previous interventions to ensure that patients’ lives are not too strict or restricted. I have a personality disorder, not a mental illness or organic brain dysfunction. Dr. Park Dietz made this distinction about Robert Bauers, a archer at the synagogue in Pittsburgh, schizophrenia. Not only did they want readers to be able to experience the challenges of their disability on a proximity basis, they also wanted them to understand that the suffering person has no control over his/her behavior.
Plus, the SPD is a double wamy. Personality disorder is a problem for both generations and pain. Think about the life of a child who is rejected, fired, and harassed every day (“Do not listen!”, “You don’t think!”, “You’re weird!”). Consider that if your son or daughter is unable to earn a decent wage or work, your parents or guardian could become lifelong benefactors (unless you are isolated). As my clinician, Dr. Selma Landisberg, said, “They [your employers] I saw you couldn’t do your job. They also didn’t understand why you couldn’t – and had very high expectations of you. Absolutely terrible luck! ”
Beyond personal, family, corporate, or community victims, consider the social things SPD forces. 65% of homeless NYC drop-in centers had schizophrenia. It emerges from pure despair. This condition accounts for high levels of homelessness. You can stop it.
2. How did you approach the publication of the story? What steps did you take?
I contacted author Harry Friedman after watching a video on Reedsy and seeing his presentation on the techniques of storytelling in non-fiction. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do articles or books. However, I had such a backstory that he had given up on the latter. I wrote chapters a month during the pandemic as 400,000 words is the lowest price for publication. He is a busy and prolific scribe, so that was easy for both of us. I completed the manuscript in a year and started getting nibbles for about a month after it circulated.
3. What do you think is the person who has the most misunderstanding about personality disorders in schizophrenia? Do you hope they can “get it”?
I think Muddles is important for the prefix “Schizoid.” SPD is not actually schizophrenia, but was once considered a precursor (schizophrenia is likely to develop into psychosis). This condition is maladaptive or defense. What people don’t get is that it’s unintended behaviour. People with SPD are not trying to ignore you, they just can’t listen. Depending on the level of their anxiety about being around people, they may not be able to work. The boss doesn’t pay you for fantasies, but not all SPDs are damaged.
4. Is SPD a preventable condition?
Online critics could not argue that any baby was born with a set of attitudes or coping mechanisms. Fantasy or separation becomes a conditioned response. Dr. Landisburg explained, “You learned that as a child, just as you have other defenses against verbal assaults.” So, taking a reductionist approach and putting them in a stable home raising a baby, he or she is made to feel loved, complimented or criticized in non-casting fashion, with a better coordination, functional, potentially independent and unique kind.
The difference between me and my Belmont High School classmates is that they came from a more stable home where the outlook was more positive. I realized when I was in a more caring and mentoring adult, as I felt good about myself, relieved my anxiety and at least externally seemed “normal.” I was not scared and I was able to concentrate. I looked more calm. The most blatant symptoms subsided – fantasy, lateness, garbled speeches. In the business world, social skills and counting are high. Reading clues is not taught while you are able to take responsibility for your work. Schizoids may overcome this obstacle when developing the entire object relationship, while retaining SPD properties.
5. So, is there any traceable causes for SPD?
Online I come across clinical speculations about the mysterious source of SPD. No one is against me. Dr. Elinor Greenberg’s book Borderlines, narcissistic, schizophrenia: the pursuit of love, praise, safetyit’s the Bible. It is emphasized that SPD is a set of attitudes and coping mechanisms developed in childhood.
Things I learned as easily as ABC without being born – yes, it is completely preventable. Dr. Greenberg also points out that if schizophrenia develops an entire object relationship, it is possible to overcome their problems of distrust and intimacy. SPD cannot be engraved in adulthood, and there is a good reason.
6. What would it be if you could waving a magic wand and let all parents raising young children around the world know one thing?
Words can be heartwarming creativity and vicious cruelty. Parents, choose you more carefully. A harsh responsibility can force your child to retreat and bring results for both you. Take a more balanced, less continuous approach. The label can remain throughout your life – as with my mother’s description, it is harmful to set an adult or perfect standard “just suitable for physical labor.” If you go to work with your child, your child may not be able to work. I don’t think any parent is negligent, but I don’t think he/she wants his/her child to bear a plunge into the homeless or alienated existence.
