Happiness vs. Total Liberation: 1% vs. 99% of you

Which path do you choose?

If you ask most people what they want out of life, the answer is almost always the same: I just want to be happy. Happiness is somehow treated as the ultimate goal of life. For some, it means health and longevity. For others, it is a stable marriage, healthy children, or financial security. Some define it through outcomes: thriving careers, awareness, creative success.

These goals are not trivial. They provide motivation, comfort and stability. But if happiness is really the end of the road, why do many people who think “have it all” confess that they feel the hollow inside them? I met wealthy individuals, people of status and fame.

That gap – the emptiness of unknown cause has been my companion for decades.

A quiet cry

There is a quiet voice in almost everyone, whether it’s health, security, or even family. Whisper: I want to feel loved, respected and safe, and my life is meaningful.

It is this cry that promotes our modern obsessions. So, post so many photos online and force checking more likes or more followers. Others scroll endlessly through dating apps and hope that the next person brings the love they long for. Psychologically crooked people are looking for magical solutions, looking for self-help books, meditation apps, or online spiritual courses.

There is nothing inherently wrong with these pursuits. They are part of being human beings of this day and age. But beneath the surface, we are all looking for the same thing: a verification of our existence. We want to know deep in our bones that we are sufficient and that we are important.

But what I have discovered after decades of searching is that such assurances do not even try to become other people, achievements, or our “higher selves.” It must come from something much deeper.

Spiritual Chase

Like many seekers, I have thrown myself into spiritual practice. For over 30 years, I devoured books, meditated daily, attended retreats, experimented with all the paths of promised answers. Along the way, I got a glimpse of the breathtaking state many times. There was a moment when I felt that I had finally “arrived.”

But no matter how deep these experiences may seem, doubts have always returned. Old unrest creeped up. My aspiration never left. It was as if my breakthrough was just a visitor and would never have been permanently resided in my mind.

I occasionally wanted relief. I wanted freedom – not the kind you read in self-help/spiritual books, but the kind that you can completely reinvent yourself. I wanted to feel light as a bird, but I couldn’t help but feel fear and the need for endless verification.

My search ultimately brought me to the non-duplexity of the advisor and Buddhist teachings. Teachers like Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta Maharaj and Alan Watts have punched a hole in me with their words. Who am I? I am. You are that. These teachings are timeless and beautiful, but I often found them too far from everyday life and too abstract. They pointed out something incredible, but rarely showed how others could embody their wisdom.

My long-standing questions asked me: Why was I born? What is my true purpose? Deep inside my mind there was another whisper: There are assignments to complete.

Losing faith in search

Gradually, I was tired of the mental market. There are too many books and seminars circling around the same theme. I’ve eliminated negative thoughts, cultivated positivity, practiced gratitude, and am now living. Each one was worth it, but nothing touched on the route I longed for.

It felt like everyone was relocating furniture from the same small room, but no one showed me the door to the mansion outside.

When he complained about his lack of progress to the teacher, his advice was simple: “Follow the proven path. Always observe yourself, as the Buddha has directed.” I tried. For years I have tried it. However, the goal post did not seem to approach.

Then, unexpectedly, something happened that changed everything.

A repetitive dream

Over the years, strange dreams have returned again and again. In it, I only saw the words –99% of your existence– Oppose against the background of an infinite sky. No explanation. There is no context. Just those words.

I didn’t understand them, but I couldn’t ignore them. Every few months, my dreams returned. I meditated, thought, and even prayed to understand the meaning of those words, but no clues appeared. For almost three years, the mystery remained sealed.

Then one rainy morning I sat in my car and saw raindrops follow the windshield, and suddenly “knowing” washed me away. Unlike the teachings I read and practiced, this insight hit me to the heart. My whole body felt it before my mind formed words.

Dreams pointed to the most obvious but often overlooked truth:

Most of us live from only 1% of us. 1% (commonly referred to as ego) is a small self, defined by labels, fear, beliefs and memory. It is a world of constant effort and is by no means sufficient. At 1%, we identify with the body and the restless mind. All human drama – victory, heartbreak, hope, despair – has made this little zone cramped. At best, we polish it and call it “happiness.”

Next, there are the other 99%.

99% is the vast and bright core of our existence: the life force of our creator. It is the same intelligence as rotating the Earth around the Sun. It guides stars, flowers, raises babies’ fingers, and regulates all heartbeat. Throughout history, saints and sages have used this truth. They realized that the personal self is a mi-pirae born out of illusion, ignorance. They accepted 99% as their true identity.

That rainy morning I knew with unwavering certainty. The only way to end the deep anxiety that humanity has invaded is to remember and embody 99% of us.

Liberation has arrived

With that perception, non-duplexity was no longer a philosophy. It has become the truth of living.

I felt fellowship between Maharshi, Maharaj, Buddha, and even Jesus. All their teachings pointed to the same thing:

  • You are not your perishable body.
  • You are not your restless mind.
  • You are not even “spirit” as you imagine.
  • You are the creator’s own pulse.

Salvation could not be expressed in words. For the first time, I felt completely free. I was freed from the concepts created by humans from the prisons of my identity, and from the need to “seek.”

I had to write a book

This finding revealed one thing. The greatest suffering of humanity is not poverty, illness, or failure. that’s right I don’t know who we really are.

We chase happiness at 1% if it’s 99% release that we really have for longer. That’s why I had to write 99% of your existence. The message was too urgent to stay with myself.

The book outlines a simple yet radical path. Let go of 1% identity and rediscover the enrichment of our essence. Touching 99% changes your life. The challenges remain, but they no longer define us. Peace occurs naturally and not as something cultivated, but as something that appears in itself.

The lightness of existence

There’s a movie called The insurmountable lightness of existence. The title perfectly captures what happens when you throw away 1% and step into 99%. The separation, fear, and the weight of effort falls. What remains is lightness. The lightness of wet clouds, gentle breeze, and the light of the sun after the rain.

When you live from 99%, no more verification is needed. You don’t need a guru, a special teacher, or even an ascended master. You are already complete and whole. Every cell in your body emits the life force of the Creator. Compassion, kindness and acceptance flow naturally.

Our previous choice

Our time on this planet is short, even if it is an illusion in itself. Why cling to beliefs that did not bring peace? Why is it still limited to 1% when the door to freedom is always open?

So here’s the choice:

  • Pursuing happiness with a vulnerable 1% – ears, wealth, status, fleeting success.
  • Awaken to liberation at 99%, living as a Creator’s expression, with a festival from all restrictive beliefs and identity.

Which one would you choose?

? This post is adopted from my upcoming book, insights shared in 99% of your existence.
