This year, it’s not edgy. I know that’s a bold statement, but after years of styling my braids back into tight buns and in careful swirls when I braid them, I’m ready to let go of my favorite knotless braids and sew-ins (for now).

According to natural hair experts, I’m not alone in making this decision. They predict that 2026 will be the year of low-tension, loose styles that lean toward the natural patterns of textured hair. susan ordellA hairstylist and braider in Los Angeles, she’s noticed more clients requesting styles with less gel and tension. This is a noticeable change from previous times when people preferred tighter styles with more product because they looked prettier and lasted longer. “Everyone wants to grow their edge and hair now,” says Ordele.

2025 brought many creative styles. There were many requests for a look that combined cornrows and sew-ins. Freestyle cornrows were all over the feed. Even braids that mimic the look of straightened hair. But this year, “people are going to do a lot of hairstyles with their hair,” Ordell says. You can also look forward to getting your natural hair done into mini twists or sister locks, or adding kinky human hair extensions to increase the length.

However, that doesn’t mean abandoning the sophisticated look completely. Swap out the polished ponytail that tugs at your scalp for shiny pixies and coils that give you the same shine and shine without the tension. Stylists predict that those with short natural hair will lean toward sculptural styles (like finger coils and finger waves), while those with long hair will change inches with soft, fluffy silk presses that require minimal heat.

For those who are focused on growing their hair and maintaining its length, ivy and tana boho braids hide hair without tugging at the scalp. (Both styles minimize root grip in favor of a natural finish.) Ahead, experts share their predictions for natural hair trends in 2026.

Pixies experienced a brief boom last year, with stars such as Keki Palmer, Teyana Taylor and Zoe Kravitz gaining attention. (I’ve even had my hair cut into cute coiled pixie hair.) Stylists say this crop isn’t going anywhere, but it’ll probably get a shiny update. Taylor and Kehlani both have smooth and wavy pixies.

Taylor’s pixie in particular emphasizes shiny, fluffy waves. To fix the look, create small waves with a mini iron.
