“‘I love you. I have this. It’s nice.'”
that’s what olivia dean I say this to myself every morning when I look in the mirror. “I lead with that mentality,” the singer says. He’s currently huddled on a plush couch in a hotel suite in downtown San Francisco. “Even if you don’t feel like it sometimes, you have to pretend.” It’s clear that Dean practices what he preaches. The title of her mega-hit album is, of course, of beloved art, And it includes songs like “So Easy (To Fall In Love)” and “I’ve Seen It,” which remind listeners that there is beauty in all forms of love, especially self-love.
The day we met, it had been less than a week since Deen won Best New Artist at the Grammys, and her excitement is still palpable. “the [only now] Dean said as he lit the Diptyque candle. “It’s been the craziest week of my life.” She has a lot of crazy days ahead of her, from her performance later that night to her upcoming (and already sold-out) world tour to her appointment as the new global brand partner for Hourglass Cosmetics, the reason we’re here today.
It was only a matter of time before Dean was snapped up by a beauty brand. Her curls fell effortlessly over her shoulders and her complexion glowed like someone who sleeps 10 hours a night and relaxes without performing at a major awards show. But Dean wants to make that clear. It took a lot of experimentation for her to arrive at her now signature style. “I think it’s absolutely ridiculous to pretend that everyone immediately knows what their style is. I really think you have to do a lot of trial and error,” she says. “I used to have the craziest eyebrows, and I totally went for it. These photos really make me laugh.”
Now, Dean’s beauty philosophy is to embrace what comes naturally. “I don’t want to feel like a completely different person on stage,” she says. “It’s about me and my everyday life, but a little more wonderfully.” While her beauty influences are immeasurable, Dean says she looks up to Audrey Hepburn and “my favorite mother-daughter duo” of Diana Ross and Tracee Ellis Ross. Dean also recently referenced a photo of Bianca Jagger, who “really owns the side part.”
Dean’s partnership with Hourglass feels like a natural fit, she says: “This brand has been in my life for a really long time already. I remember going to Liberty in London and the first set I ever bought were their brushes. Now I’ve got all the travel brushes to go on tour with.” That’s when Dean opens her makeup bag and shows off her current favorites. She’s rocking the Veil Hydrating Skin Tint (“I’m either shade 10 or 11, depending on how much sun I’ve been in,” she says, “Today it’s 10.”), the Grammys Perform Lip Liner (one of her new gig perks; it’s a new shade that hasn’t been released yet), and Infinite’s new Unreal Liquid Highlighter in a yellowish gold. “I’m pretty true to being a blush girl, but I’ve also started doing highlights on top of that, which is absolutely gorgeous,” Dean says. “You look like you just stepped off the beach.” The highlighter and tint are two of the three products that make up the product (along with the brand’s Vanish Airbrush Concealer). “Olivia Edit” It is the first in a series of capsule collections that Dean will select for The Hourglass as part of his new role.
