Is there a bigger procrastinator in the world than someone who can’t decide whether to cut or grow their mid-length hair?
It’s like a curse!
If they see me with chin-to-shoulder length hair, they will assume I am the most boring person in the world, and they will rattle off the pros and cons of having short hair (“It looks amazing when you style it!”) or long hair (“It requires very little styling and can be tied back!”), responding to any advice with a look of anguish on their face, as if to say: You don’t understand my predicament.
Because it’s true. Those who don’t have medium-length hair don’t know how unsettling it is to be trapped in hair purgatory here and there, wandering the hairstyle hinterlands. Those who have chosen medium length on purpose are fine. Some like it free and loose, swaying, not touching their torso or hanging off their chin. They are medium length by choice, and don’t suffer from the constant feeling of indecision that some medium-length people are “just passing through.”
Because, isn’t that the reality? Those who are growing their hair short, or, conversely, those who are trying to cut their long hair short but not yet to the point of a bob. Medium length is a transitional period, a waiting room, but you have to stay there for a long time, so you start to think that maybe it would be better to stop bothering and get it over with, towards the exit. Cut it all off again, cut the bangs, whatever. Just bear with the boredom of the medium length period.

Two things: I am in no way saying that medium length hair is boring, I am saying that the hair growth phase is boring, and two, I understand that there are more things to worry about in life, that the entire planet is in destruction and destruction mode, that AIs are trying to take over the world, but again, anyone who doesn’t have medium length hair doesn’t understand our predicament.
We can picture ourselves with long, beautiful hair that hangs silkily over our shoulders and is just the right weight. But we also flip through photos of short French-girl bobs and lament the loss of their cool look. We lament the sexy short hair that made us look 10 years younger and our necks longer and more elegant. A haircut that will give you a messy kitten look in about eight minutes. differentfresh, and (pardon the use of this word) sassy.
The chin-to-shoulder hair growth phase forces us mid-length people to go back and forth between two options almost constantly. It’s mental torture. How long should we wait? Do we wait and then realize that it was all for nothing and we should have kept it short?
That’s the hair version of that scene. brave heart William Wallace rides into the tense troops and tells them: Wait! Wait! Draw the line! He wants them to wait and not rush in too quickly, he wants them to let their hair down a little longer and be a little more patient.
(Oh my goodness, that’s the worst example I’ve ever used.)
William Wallace didn’t want to waste that time of preparation, that period of intense preparation and pep talk leading up to the battle, by suddenly going in in a panic and shooting guns blazing (they didn’t have guns, but I wouldn’t have been surprised if they did in the movie). brave heart (Not known for historical accuracy.) If they had rushed in, it would have been like ripping off all my hair before I had a chance to see what long hair felt like.
No, no. This whole strange analogy just falls apart.
What I am trying to say is that with medium length hair, I tend to spend a lot of time thinking about what style I want to go with because I am growing my hair out short.
The reason I make this entirely useless preamble is because last week I had the opportunity to shoot again with Sam McKnight: MBE recipient, super hairstylist, iconic style creator (famously cut Princess Diana’s hair short), and one of the most prolific and inspirational hairstylists in the world.
We were filming him styling the ultimate “supermodel hair.” myself It’s my chance to read to him my new book (which, if you’ve been hiding under a rock, is out now – How not to be a supermodel Available here)and he It was a chance for him to regale me with some great stories from the old days. It was like a Jackanory in the studio on a Friday. It really was.
But here’s the noteworthy part of the conversation: Coming into the studio, I wasn’t too happy with the length of my hair and thought it might be too long for a supermodel makeover. I asked Sam how he would cut my hair if he could do anything he wanted, and he simply replied, “Leave it the way it is.”
Imagine that! One of the world’s greatest hair maestros tells you that the length of your hair that you previously thought was a bit “dry” is actually almost perfect. Multi-purposehe called it. nice.*
Of course, maybe he just didn’t want to take out the scissors, and thought that if I said, “Okay, just cut it,” he’d be exhausted and have to start wetting my hair, draping my dressing gown over my shoulders, etc. But in a way, he gave me the cleverest answer: Who wouldn’t love to be told that the hair they have right now is just the best haircut they could ever have?
Never mind. I’m cutting my hair. At the very least, it will put an end to the daily dilemma (to grow or cut?) and motivate me to learn new styles and techniques. Either way, I’ve gotten over the gnarly Lord Farquaad mid-length phase, where my hair turned into a square triangular wedge that made me look like a medieval lutenist.
(I wrote an article on my website about clever tips for growing hair hereThis is one of those posts that should be moved to Substack for easy reference.
So maybe I’m in a rare situation where my hair just doesn’t hold up, and I owe it to Sam to give it new life. Maybe I really am. morning Just the right amount – perfect…right? Because instead of just tying your hair back, you can curl it to give it shape and bounce, or straighten it to make it look longer and sleek.
I had about six weeks left before I had to shave it all off again, but at my next appointment I might say, “I’m going to have to go and get it done.
“Just a little trim.”

*I can’t promise you he said the cool part, I had to think of different words for rhythm and flow.
