Risks from non-FDA approved injections can include blood clots, nodule, allergic reactions and inflammatory reactions, Dr. Levine adds. “Injecting products that have not passed that process puts patients and practitioners at incredible risk,” stresses Dr. Shamban. Even if the product is approved in the future (or if you travel to receive treatment in a legal country), there are risks to consider. Because it comes from fish, salmon DNA sounds like a “natural” treatment. While this may imply safety for some people, salmon-based treatments can cause irritation, allergic reactions, and breakouts, says Dr. Gohara.

Following microneedling, local FDA-approved PDRNs pose several risks, including bacterial introduction and triggering inflammation. “Imagine giving your skin a small paper cut. Imagine rubbing fish proteins against those cuts now,” explains Dr. Gohara. “That’s why infertility, proper techniques, and post-treatment care can’t be negotiated.”

“Imagine giving small paper cuts to your skin. Now imagine rubbing fish proteins against those cuts. So infertility, proper techniques, and post-treatment care can’t be negotiated.”

There are many red flags in the world of aesthetics. Some of the biggest things to keep in mind when seeking safe salmon DNA treatments include an ambiguous list of ingredients, pressure to act quickly with “limited time” trades, and treatments offered in non-health environments, says Dr. Gohara. “Legal procedures will always be clear about the content of the product, how it applies, and whether it is approved by the FDA.”

Doctors believe there is a possibility of more FDA-approved salmon treatments in the future. “Salmon injections are used in other countries that have good results in certain cases. I think they are best when combined with other recycled products,” says Dr. Levine. If they are approved for injection purposes in the US, she hopes to “see the differences in the formulations of various companies and determine where I would be comfortable injecting it into the face.” And of course, she wants to prove that the injection provides “substantial results.”

Word of mouth and social media are really convincing. If you’re watching a lot of videos of people with radiant, glowing skin, and say you owe it all to salmon sperm, it’s natural to want to try it yourself. But for every video that praises the service, Board-certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons say they are looking forward to more research along with the FDA’s blessings. “If you’re booking services based on Tiktok trends, take a breath and say, “Who is doing this? What is the product? Is this used approved?” Dr. Gohara says. “If you’re in doubt, check with a board-certified dermatologist. Your face is not a place of guesswork.”
