You’ve probably seen ultra-long lip smudges that promise to promote up to 24 hours of wear across social media channels. But are they actually working? Lip stains can be a reliable tool for those who have been looking for a long-standing colour if left to be left all day long. They balance pigmentation and lifespan, making them perfect for days and events where there is no time for constant touch-ups. So what will last them, what should you look for when choosing them, and how do you make the most of them?

Why do lip stains last for a long time?
Unlike traditional lipsticks, lip stains tend to use dyes and pigments that adhere to the lips, creating a permanent shade that fades away when eaten or drunk. Many are designed to be waterproof, ensuring that the colour will be present for hours. Drawback? They can be very dry so I recommend considering topping them with gloss or balm (and this should be topped!).
What to look for on lip stains
Lip stains can be found in a variety of finishes, from matte to gloss. Matte finishes tend to last longer, while shiny ones may wear faster, leaving a flat cleaning of colour. Look for formulas that contain hyaluronic acid, glycerin, vegetable oils, or shea butter to prevent dryness and keep your lips comfortable through wear. The waterproof type offers the longest-lasting color payoffs.
How to apply lip stains
To get the most out of lip stains, start by gently peeling off your lips and creating a smooth base for even applications. Next, apply a moisturizing lip balm and allow it to absorb for a few minutes before applying the dye. Apply a light layer of dye and suck up with tissue between each layer for a stronger, longer lasting color. Finally, set the stain for at least 30 seconds depending on the intensity you want.
How do you remove dirt from your lips?
Putting them on is one thing, but taking them off is a completely different challenge! Try breaking down the pigment using an oil-based make-up remover or cleansing balm. Gently massage the remover onto your lips with a cotton pad or purifying cloth. If the colour remains, use a gentle lip scrub. Don’t forget to moisturize your lips after cleansing.
