FAQ
What is CC cream?
CC cream is an abbreviation for “color correction cream,” and it is a cream that does not cover redness, dullness, or dullness, but rather neutralizes and evens out skin tone. It states that the pigments are “mixed to neutralize skin tone and create a more even-looking complexion,” often adjusting different undertones in the process. Pilar Demana makeup artist based in Washington Depot, CT. Traditionally, it was considered lighter than foundation, but these days that’s not always the case. “Some of them are very pigmented,” she points out. So while it may feel lightweight, it’s still packed with enough color to really provide coverage. Many formulas are also easy to incorporate into your skin care routine and have the added benefit of helping smooth uneven skin texture, offering everything from a dewy glow to a more matte finish, depending on the formula.
How are CC creams different from tinted moisturizers and BB creams?
While tinted moisturizers are primarily intended for light hydration with a touch of color, and BB (beauty balm) creams feature skin care benefits with light to medium coverage, CC creams are designed to correct color by using pigments to neutralize redness, dullness, and uneven tone. They often have more coverage than tinted moisturizers and feel more targeted than BB creams. It’s especially good if your goal is to even out your skin without relying on foundations, which can be too heavy for mature skin.

How to test and review products
Before reviewing makeup, we ask questions about various factors. What ingredients does it contain? Does the brand offer a wide range of shades aimed at consumers of all skin tones and undertones? Is it safe for readers with sensitive skin or who wear contact lenses? Is it affordable or more than a splurge? Is the packaging consciously designed or is it wasted?
To review the best CC creams, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and makeup artists to review products. This ensures that the testing base spans a variety of skin tones, genders, and skin conditions. We considered each product’s performance across four key categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and comprehensiveness.
