What if I asked you? In your opinion, what is the most iconic makeup look of all time?Of course, most people will talk about the classic red lip or pin-up eyeliner, but some will casually mention colored mascara. But for me personally, it’s the smokey eye look. It is certainly considered to be the undisputed champion of evening makeup. By the way, you can interpret the appearance in any way you like. And I’m actually one of those people who thinks smokey eyes can be taken as day to night makeup.
Let’s start with Taylor Swift’s iconic look at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. Aside from the absolutely gorgeous dress (note the flannel shirt vibe!), Taylor wore a classic version of the smokey eye look, slightly adjusted to match her eye color. It is translucent and has a bluish tone, which matches the warm color of her lips beautifully.
- Selena Gomez named Billboard’s “Woman of the Year” photo shoot, 2017
I can’t express my love for this gorgeous makeup in simple words. The billboard photoshoot became unforgettable. Thanks to the incredible styling skills of Kate Young, Selena was able to express her inner self through her photos. The combination of a subtle smokey eye and a bold red lip is definitely a killer combo.
- Larisa Manoban’s “Rockstar” music video, 2024
When I was researching for today’s blog post, I couldn’t pass up Lisa and her “Rockstar” music video makeup. This photo of her smoky look must be the illustration next to the word’s explanation in the dictionary. I’m serious! Shiny inner corners, subtle tight lines, and those shimmers are sure to add spice to the look. If you’re still on the fence, consider this a sign to try this style out for yourself.
- Pamela Anderson 29th American Music Awards, 2002
we all know it and love it Pamela doesn’t wear makeupand we admire the positivity she exudes in her messages. I truly believe we can all do it. Looks great even without makeup. But for today’s edit, let’s take a look back at her attendance at the 29th Annual American Music Awards. We still remember your glittering two-piece dress, Pam, and we definitely can’t forget your spectacular silvery-black Smokey with the blackest eye kohl at the waterline.
- billie eilish Vogue magazine, 2016
It was hard to find pictures of Billy with smokey eyes, but I decided to add this makeup to the list. What about purple eyeshadow on her blue eyes? Or should we say about her “sea eyes”? Well, in any case, this look was great and very trendy at the time.
- Doja Cat at the 2021 Grammy Awards Ceremony
Doja Cat is well known for her dramatic changes to her appearance, but my favorite is the dramatic eye makeup she wore at the 2021 Grammy Awards. If you’re looking for a drama with high eyebrows, you’ll find it here. Smoky eyeshadow extends all the way to your eyebrows, creating an unforgettable gradient. How do you like it?
- Jennifer Lawrence attends Dior Cruise 2025
The next look worn by Jennifer Lawrence at the Dior Cruise 2025 show is a little more understated. When you want to feel extra glamorous, but it’s still before noon. We’re kidding, of course, but this nude brown makeup with dark brown tight lining is a great option that looks universally flattering for day to night scenes.
I stumbled upon this look on Pinterest and was struck by the elegance of Kylie’s look. I don’t think anyone can be as smoky as she is. But did you know that the secret to a perfect smokey eye is the perfect blend of colors? Makeup artist Rachel Grimes reveals, “The secret to a great smokey eye is that you can’t see the lines between each color.” As you can see, this is a perfect example.
- Zoe Kravitz at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party (2015)
Smoky makeup is not only about color and seamless blending, but also about the shape of the look. Look at how beautifully Zoe’s eye shape is highlighted by the eyeshadow. It extends from the temple upwards creating a wing-like effect. Pair this look with a nude lip for a stunning finish.
- Ariana Grande Grammy Awards 2016
And at the end of today’s post, let’s appreciate Ali’s beauty and class at the Grammy Awards. Smokey, a brown with a bare lower lash line and barely there lipstick, is perfect for her gorgeous coral red dress. If you like it as much as I do, give it a try, this time paired with a simple black dress.
In conclusion…
